The Rockville Coast Guard Station has been a part of the Maryland Department of Transportation's transportation system since it was established in 1927. The station currently provides a wide range of services, including law enforcement and search and rescue; maritime security; traffic control; and environmental protection. The Coast Guard Station is one of the oldest government-owned stations in the United States. It was authorized by an act of Congress on February 6, 1927, as part of the National Highway System. On May 8, 1934, the first patrol boat arrived at the Rockville Point Light House. In 1967, during the Vietnam War era, Coast Guard patrols were first sent to Cambodia to provide humanitarian relief. After that mission was completed, helicopter service began providing support for patrols offshore from Rockville Point Light House until 1978 when helicopters were moved ashore at Lighthouse Point in Annapolis. In 1984, new facilities were erected on Governors Island adjacent to Interstate 95 while construction continued on land acrossriver at Mount Vernon Landing which would eventually become home to the U.S. Naval Academy and other federal agencies along with local businesses and residences south of I-95 near what is now North Capitol Boulevard Southport Road). In 2007–2008 edition there have been many changes taking place within/outside public domain due to budget cuts so here are few items about this time: 1) A memorial fund has been set up through GoFundMe page called "Rockville COAST GUARD STATION GIVEAWAY" (https://www2.gofundme.com/rockville-coast-guard-station-giveaway) where citizens can contribute money towards prizes given away annually -details being updated as prize information becomes available 2) There has also been a change within MD DOT where all gift cards will now be considered taxable income - details TBD but likely around $50 per item or less which will affect some items like gasoline etc... The population of Rockville increased from 1,500 in 1800 to more than 30,000 by 1870. The townsite was developed as a cotton mill town with mills running on the creek that ran through it. By 1907, most of the mills had been destroyed by fire, but some remained and continued to produce goods until they closed in 1948.
