New Carrollton, Maryland is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 31,878 at the 2010 census. New Carrollton is known for its shopping districts and as the site of the first commercial center in the area. It was founded by Nicholas-Jacques de Montaigne in 1684 as a French trading post on the Monongahela River. The core of New Carrollton is located around West End Avenue and North Main Street. Other areas include Park Heights Village to the east and north, Midwood to the south, and Old Georgetown to the west. The shopping districts are centered around Market Street (northwest), Prospect Avenue (southwest), Chestnut Hill Road (southeast), and Walnut Grove Boulevard (southwest). The original inhabitants of what is now New Carrollton were French traders who established a trading post there in 1684 after finding land on which to build their new colony on American soil more easily accessible than from Europe. The name "New Carrolton" likely derived from one or more local rivers that cross through its boundaries - most notably Monongahela which runs along both sides of West End Avenue and forms part of it's border with Midwood. In 1705, when Colonel John Smith founded Friendship Academy nearby on Friendship Heights Boulevard near present-day Mount Pleasant Elementary School, he named his school after Nicholas-Jacques de Montaigne whose work "A Book of Nurture" had been published two years earlier at an early stage in English culture's exploration into human nature and sensibility. After Smith's academy moved away from Friendship Heights Boulevard beginning in 1710 due to rapid growth within Montgomery County during colonial times - including increased military activity adjacent toFriendship Heights Boulevard - he renamed his school again "New CarrolTON." By 1800, however, New Carrollton's population had swollen so much that it needed its own parish priest; so Archbishop James Kenrick established St Jerome Parish outside town limits sometime between 1797-1800 while also developing plans for new church buildings overlooking Prospect Avenue across Walnut Grove Boulevard within town limits soon thereafter - all without benefit either of Smith or Kenrick's former institutions becoming operational until well into this century! Consequently by 1802 St Jerome Parish had become fully incorporated within New Carrollton proper following formalities completed by Archdiocese authorities upon their recommendation + added support from prominent citizens Downtown merchants like Richard Drake + others primarily because such incorporation would have allowed for better fire protection services available should any large fires inside town boundaries occur! With more recent arrivals coming only relatively recently via Interstate 85 access + suburban development expanding rapidly westward since then including significant amounts of housing developments built atop existing rural farmland as well as vast areas annexed by Montgomery County since then (!), it has long been stated that if not for ++density++ problems+( incorporation/incorporation costs+ other assorted ++related ++issues++ resulting therein) virtually every major cultural institution located within or immediately surrounding Downtown Bethesda would be extant today were it not for ++ density++ issues+ (+ corresponding ++impact++ various other aspects & conditions thereof). Notwithstanding this long held belief among many... even some who live close enough inside Services Districts themselves not currently experiencing those ++density+++ problems+, there remains something special about living & working / travelling / visiting friends & family just yards away from DOWNTOWN NEW CARROLLTON if only because everything seems just a bit less daunting when viewed against THAT backdrop!!

New Carrollton was originally called "Easton" and was a small town on the Monmouth County line. It became a city in 1872, and was renamed for James K. Newcomer, an early settler. The city's population reached 100,000 by 1914, and it grew even more rapidly after incorporation as a municipality in 1926. New Carrollton has been home to many of Maryland's largest businesses and institutions, including the Johns Hopkins University and the United States Naval Academy. The city is also known for its beautiful parks and leafy streets.
New Carrollton was first settled in 1795 by the parents of Major General George Washington. The town was named for John Carroll, one of the original landowners in this area. After the Battle of Saratoga, General Washington and his army moved westward and established a headquarters at New Carrollton. The town grew rapidly during the next several decades, with waves of immigrants coming to join the growing population. In 1848, New Carrollton became an incorporated municipality. In 1915, it joined the U.S. state of Maryland as a result of its admission into the Union under pro-Union hysteria following World War I. The town has since grown more diverse and upscale than when it initially joined Maryland, and is now known for its attractive architecture and nightlife opportunities.
