New Carrollton is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is the seat of government for the county. The population was 20,798 at the 2010 census. New Carrollton is adjacent to Bowie and Silver Spring. The area that would become New Carrollton was first settled by Germans in 1772 as part of Frederick County. In 1837, New Carrollton became part of Montgomery County when it was created from parts of Prince George's and Frederick counties. The first white inhabitants of what would become New Carrollton were German immigrants who founded a logging village known as "Fürstenwalde" (English: "Forst Woods"). The village ceased operation after a fire destroyed its logs in 1845. In 1865, John Waddell built what is now the original city hall on Main Street in what later became known as downtown New Carrollton. In 1870, another German immigrant named Friedrich Meyer constructed a sawmill on White Marsh Creek near present-day Bowie Boulevard and Main Street. That mill continued operations until 1915 when it was replaced by the current one which stands today on Market Street just north of Interstate 66. From 1867 to 1888, two brothers named Edward Atherton and Alfred Kapp owned land southeast of present-day Bowie Boulevard and Third Avenue which they called "Athertons Hill." They used this land to raise hogs and poultry for their farmstead located about 1 mile northeast of present day Bowie Boulevard between Rusk Road and White Marsh Creek Drive/Route 624/White Marsh Creek Parkway (now I-66). On July 12, 1886,Edward Atherton sold his interest in "Athertons Hill" to Abraham Peck who then subdivided the property into lots which he sold off in 1895 to various developers including Jens Jensen (1849-1925), Julius Weisbach (1875-1965), Fritz Haughey (1879-1963) and Harry Biddle (1900-1976).
