The Maryland Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1776. The unit's first unit was organized on December 15, 1776 and known as the 1st Battalion of York County militiamen. In 1866, the 1st Regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Regiment of Infantry and in 1916 it was redesignated as the 9th Regiment of Infantry. On July 16, 1917, during World War I, the regiment became part of United States Army Reserve and served with distinction until September 4, 1918 when it was mustered out. In 1921, the regiment re-formed and became known as Company A (3rd Battalion) of the 6th Regiment of Infantry. On November 5, 1941, Company A (3rd Battalion) was re-organized into a company designated "A" (5th Armored Cavalry). The company designation remained untilactivated on October 14th 1946 when it reverted to its original name Company A (3rd Battalion) Maryland Army National Guard. The brigade also activated Company B (2nd Brigade), which is also now inactive; this company traces its origins back to 1862 when it formed at Fort McHenry under command of Captain John Waddell. During World War II it served with distinction in Europe where it earned three battle stars for actions including action at Normandy Beach on June 6-8 1944 and Battle of Carentan on August 26-29 1944 Today there are over 875 MarylandArmy National Guard soldiers deployed overseas in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom doing everything from patrolling our borders to fighting onshore against terrorism

New Carrollton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. New Carrollton is located in the eastern edge of the county and on the north bank of the Potomac River. It is bordered to the south by Bowie and to the east by Fredericktown. The original town site was located near present-day New Carrollton Junction on Route 1 (now Interstate 295), about two miles east of today's downtown core. The name "New Carrolton" was given to it by General John J. Pershing while he was commanding Ulysses S. Grant's army during World War I on his way to battle in Front Royal, Virginia In 1923, New Carrolton incorporated as a city under its own government with a mayor and City Council. In 1957, Anne Arundel County annexed part of Prince George's County and made New Carrollton an enclave within that county; however, both towns have continued to function as separate municipalities with their own governments since then. According to the 2000 census, there were 17,514 people living in New Carrollton when it ceded its annexation rights to Anne Arundel County; however only 14,846 residents actually lived there after 2001 because most moved out into Bowie or Fredericktown following the establishment of those communities as official annexations into Anne Arundel County from neighboring jurisdictions.. As of 2010 census estimates 21% of all residents are foreign born (of any race), more than any other municipality in Maryland outside Baltimore City.. There are also high concentrations of African American residents (-86%) and Latinos (+44%), compared with similarly sized populations for Caucasian/White (14%, 10%), Asian (+5%), American Indian/Alaska Native (+1%) and other racial/ethnic groups (2%). In terms of age distribution 19% of adults 25 years or older are married couples living together through no different arrangement than cohabitating unmarried partners; 13% have children age 18 or younger; 11% have parents 65 years or older who are still working; 9% live alone; 5% have an income below poverty line ($2700/year). According to 2006 US Census data new Carrolltons median household income is $863/. The modern army is one of the most complex and venerable institutions in world history. It dates back to the middle of the 1st century BC, when Rome's first military force was raised to protect its borders against barbarian invasions. The Roman soldier was a highly skilled fighting machine with a repertoire of deadly skills that still remains relevant today. Over time, different armies have been organized into legions (1,000 men), cohorts (100 men), or dicastoles (40 men). Each legion consisted of 10 cohorts and each cohort consisted of 100 soldiers. In addition, there were artillery units and cavalry squads. The Roman enlisted man was known as a militus (soldier). He had two duties: he served his unit in battle and he performed garrison duty around Rome. His monthly pay totaled 4 denarii which amounted to about $20 in current currency values. At the beginning of the 3rd century AD, Constantine I created an all-powerful state church called the Orthodox Church which eventually became the largest religion in Europe. This new ecclesiastical power gave rise to new military organizations such as the Equestrian Legion (or just Horse Legion) made up mostly of horsemen who fought on foot against barbarians on religious grounds instead of for financial gain as earlier armies had done. At this point, cavalry no longer played an important role in warfare but rather acted as reconnaissance and support units during campaigns while infantry manned larger formations to fight on more strategic fronts. By 350 AD, large numbers of troops were being drafted into Byzantine Legions under Emperor Constantine II for service in his war against Islam across Anatolia and Syria; however even these massive conscriptions could not wholly replace what horses could doantry forces had become obsolete by then due to advances in technology like chariots and light cavalry
