Laurel is an unincorporated community located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. At that time there were no roads or rails to transport goods from Baltimore to Annapolis so Haines built a cabin on what is now Spring Lane and named it after himself, Laurel Hill. In 1807 John Smith moved to Laurel from present day Frederick County and soon became one of its most respected citizens. Smith served as Adjutant General for the Institution of Marines and later as Mayor of Baltimore. In 1829, James Logan founded what is now the town of Easton which lay on his farm that he had purchased from John Smythe (now part of Bowie). Easton grew quickly due to its location by the Potomac River – it was only before World War II that development stopped entirely because of high taxes levied by then-Governor Charles Flanagan during World War II
