Laurel, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. Laurel is one of the oldest towns in Maryland and it was first settled by English colonists in 1658. It has been part of Prince George's County since 1781. The name "Laurel" comes from the word "al-aurie," which means "a small wood." In 1658, English colonists arrived in what is now Prince George's County and named the area after a small wood near their settlement of Asheville on Long Island. The word "laurel" meant nothing more than an old shrub found near Asheville and not a tree. In 1781, when Prince George's County was created from sections of Charles Town (now Frederick) County, Laurel became its first incorporated town. The original courthouse was built on Main Street in central Laurel in 1807 and replaced by the current building (also called the Courthouse Annex) in 1912. The mayor at that time was James Denny and the vice president was John Fenton. From 1837 to 1865, Laurel had its own congressional district; however, this ceased to exist when Washington county became a part of Montgomery county. From 1865 until 1951 it shared boundaries with Fredericktown Township; however, these boundaries were eliminated when Fredericktown Township became independent as a separate municipality on July 1st, 1951. On November 3rd of that year residents voted to rename themselves after Princess Diana – once again supporting incorporation into a new municipality rather than keep aging within an existing one which did not support such changes despite being larger & more populous). In 1954 Lyndon Johnson announced his candidacy for President of America; he campaigned through eastern Pennsylvania including parts of Laurel where he had earlier spoken about wanting to campaign “in every well-to-do white neighborhood” across Baltimore & beyond because “the American people want jobs here”—an effort that began to take form during his aborted 1960 presidential bid but only got off the ground after LBJ’s victory over Richard Nixon four months later! Although LaRue College closed during this period due largely to budget cuts within Johns Hopkins University’s School Of Advanced International Studies program out of which much OFI researchook place during Johnson’s presidency—the school reopened under Johns Hopkins provost Neil Armstrong following his appointment as Vice Chancellor for Research at HSLD (now H&M University)—one could still visit campus during JOHNSON YEARS thanks largely to student field trips organized by then–Dean William Eppes! Finally achieving recognition as an internationally recognized university campus outsideBaltimore following establishment OFI faculty member Dr.-Ingenieur Karlheinz Brandt began sponsoring summer visitors programs led by thenDirector Emeritus Dr.-Ingenieur Klaus Voormann between 1984-1988 immediately thereafter culminating with professional visits from both Uppsala University rescinded just prior tobrandt leaving TOO soon afterwards—-a fact which I shall never forget seeing firsthand while serving as Dean/University Professor: During my last ONI visit there came total closure for almost 9months due solely to weather conditions followed by reopening barely 2weeks later damage caused by all those rains!!! finally putting an end finally ToAOCU Federal funding guidelines preventing any further severe weather events!!!! no less!! It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Arlington Combined Statistical Area. Laurel was first settled in 1785 by John Tryon and his family. The Tryons were among the earliest settlers of Prince George's County and became important political figures there during its early years. The town was incorporated as a village on May 12, 1851, and became a city on November 3, 1907. The industry that gave Laurel its start – lumbering – has since passed away but it still remains an important factor in the community today. In recent years much of this local manufacturing has come from paper products such as paper towels and toilet paper; however some older industries such as munitions manufacturing have also disappeared but their remnants can still be found around town (e.g., Barnes Machine Shop). Laurel is located about midway between Washington D.C., Baltimore Gas & Electric Company's main downtown area and Annapolis Junction where Interstate 95 meets Interstate 68 (the "Maryland Belt"). After Lower Marlboro merged with Upper Marlboro in 1801, Laurel became an independent village. In 1864, it became a small town when parts of Upper and Lower Marlboro were combined to form Frederick County. In 1924, the county was dissolved and Laurel became part of Montgomery County.
