The Laurel Coast Guard Station was founded in 1908 and has been a part of the United States Coast Guard ever since. The station is located on the Annapolis River, about 15 miles north of downtown Laurel and 11 miles south of Washington D.C. It patrols the waters around Laurel, Md., and surrounding areas, making it one of the busiest coast guard stations in the country. The Coast Guard Station offers a wide variety of gifts to commemorate various occasions and events. Some examples include mementos from service members who have died or are no longer with us, collectibles such as coins or medals, watches or jewelry, books or other items that may be used by firefighters or first responders. In addition to its gift shop where visitors can purchase supplies for their firefighting professions, the station also has an exhibit area where they display artifacts from throughout history related to coastal defense including cannons and meteorological equipment. Since its inception, the Coast Guard Station has had many employees who have gone on to make significant contributions in their field: Captains John Wiltse (1930-2002), Clifford Aiken (1941-2003), Edwin Leland (1947-2005) and Leroy Pope (1963-2006). Today’s staff includes more than 100 officers and civilians who work together to provide security along our nation’s coastline.

The Coast Guard Gift Shop in Laurel, Maryland has been selling gift items to the public since 1936. The shop is one of the oldest Coast Guard gift stores in the United States and specializes in military and civilian gifts. The Coast Guard Gift Shop was founded by Captain John Fenton and his wife Mabel in 1936. Captain Fenton was a member of the Coast Guard from 1906-1966 and was responsible for numerous aspects of the service, including developing gift policies and overseeing the gift shop. In addition to their retail store, Captain Fenton also ran an annual Christmas party for members of the Coast Guard who lived along the East coast. In 1984,Captain Donnie Sibley became Superintendent at The Coast guard Gift Shop after serving as Assistant Chief until 1981. During his time at COAST GUARD GIFT SHOP, he developed new programs that included marketing to children as well as increasing sales during holiday seasons. In December 2004 DONNIE SIBLEY retired from his position as Superintendent at COAST GUARD GIFT SHOP effective May 1st 2005 He will continue to be Catalogue Manager at The Coastal guard Store until his successor is appointed. At present there are no plans for a successor but if someone interested or qualified applies they would be interviewed for the position

The Coast Guard has been providing aid and assistance to communities on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for over 160 years. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect life, property, and environment by providing a safe harbor, maritime rescue, and environmental protection services. In 2013, the Coast Guard celebrated its centennial with a plethora of commemorative items and events. Many of these commemoration items were related to the Agency’s history or service to the community. Some highlights from 2013 include the unveiling of a new memorial at Fort Fisher in Wilmington, Delaware; the awarding of four Medals of Honor; inclusion in Smithsonian's National Museum of American History; as well as numerous gifts from individuals and businesses across America. In celebration of its centennial year, many special items were made available such as an engraved cigar box that held an original letter from Adm. John J. Pershing congratulating Coast Guard members for their “courageous stand against piracy” during World War II; a bronze bust of Rear Admiral Harry S. Truman honoring both men for their service in coastal defense during World War II; mementos from more than 1 million miles ridden by coast guard boats since 1915 including photos, charts and log books dating back to 1920 Many people may not know about someof the earlier coast guard gift history- especially if they are unaware that it spans back centuries! Here are five examples: 1) The first coast guard gift was given in 1879 when Captain Gouverneur Morris donated a small boat named after himself- Morris Island (now known as Governors Island). This vessel was used for patrolling New York Harbor waters between Manhattan and BrooklynNJ 2) From 1892 until 1912, various gifts were given monthly or quarterly to each member state patrol squadron stationed along coastline US coasts- this included model submarines (launched into seas off Maine & California), lifesavers (received kit with pFD swimmer gear), Flagstaff lights etc.. These gifts came in different shapes & sizes which can be seen on various objects now stored inside NMHS… [Note: It is interesting] Some members even received money! 3) In 1923, Commodore Francis Lighthouse supplied one $5 Ulysses S Grant gold coin donation which became known as “Coastguard Coin – America’s First” 4) In 1936 Governor Charles Ellington issued an annual Christmas card with remarks highlighting coast guard services throughout Northeastern United States…..[ Note: This item also resides at NMHS] 5) A set of three Tiffany glass slides depicting scenes from lighthouse keeper/agent life aboard ship MV Northampton while underway off Long Island Sound between 1951 - 1957 were gifted to Coastguard Stationlicensed photographer Artie Langevin by his wife Mrs Ann Langevin …...They currently reside in NJUH…. Laurel is located in central Maryland, about 25 miles northwest of Washington D.C. It was founded at the junction of two major roads in 1777 by Capt. John Smith and his men as a trading post on the east side of the Potomac River. The town quickly became an important stop on the Underground Railroad and later became a center for industry and politics in central Maryland. In 1881, when Baltimore City was created, Laurel was designated as its capital and remained so until 1955 when it moved to Annapolis. The city has since become a bedroom community for western Maryland and Virginia with many large homes dating from before World War II. Laurel is home to several important historical sites including: Fort George Washington National Monument (the first U.S. national monument), Catoctin Mountain House (the birthplace of Joseph Addison), Mount Vernon (the home of George Washington), Druid Hill Park (a site where Druid kings held rituals) and Four-Mile Bridge over Patapsco River which is also one of the oldest bridges in America
Laurel, Maryland was originally land grant to Thomas Smith in 1792. It became a town in 1849 and became the county seat of Prince George's County in 1853. The area around Laurel was settled by English colonists who arrived during the colonial era. The first permanent settler in what is now Laurel was John Nicholson, who located on a small stream near today's Greenbelt neighborhood. By 1800, the population of Laurel had grown to about 100 people and it commercially grew with the development of some nearby plantations that produced tobacco for export. In 1824, General James Wilkinson laid out a road from Georgetown to Mount Vernon through Laurel and its surrounding area which facilitated trade between Georgetown and Baltimore City. He named one of his roads "Wilkinson Road" after General Wilkinson. The growth of Laurel led to increased traffic on the road and caused problems for local residents who were not able to pay taxes or build roads themselves because they did not own land within the town limits. In 1870, when Prince George's County was created from parts of Washington and Baltimore counties, it included part of what is now Laurel as well as other towns such as Upper Marlboro and Takoma Park. As part of this process, many farms within central Prince George's County were sold off so that more land could be developed for housing and commercial purposes. In 1916, when King's Chapel Episcopal Church was built adjacent to present-day Druid Hill Park, much controversy emerged over whether or not it should have been allowed within city limits because it would have interfered with official government functions atacioned within city boundaries (e.g., public parks). Ultimately, despite protests from many citizens living close by who felt their properties would be taken away if their church were granted municipal status (it wasn't), King's Chapelreceived full municipal rights in 1916 while other religious places such as Bethesda Presbyterian Church received only interim status until they could be resolved definitively through discussion or lawsuits). After World War II ended, new development began along Interstate 95 which ran through central Prince George's County; this increased traffic on Wilkinson Road which led to more complaints from locals about how their property was being used without their permission or compensation. Eventually enough patience wore thin among some residents who banded together into an effort called "Langston Hughes Campaign" which targeted Representative Edwin Meeks (D-Maryland) with signatures calling for him to block all new development along I95 until he reached consensus on something resembling community benefits agreement specifically designed for developing areas near urban cores like Johns Hopkins University/Baltimore State University/the Inner Harbor/ etc.). This campaign failed but paved the way for future efforts targeting politicians directly based on sectorial interests instead of evenly shared goals like creating neighborhoods rich in character rather than just building high-rise hotels/. The region around Laurel became increasingly suburban after World War II due largely to two factors: increasing commuting rates outsidePrince George's County for jobs in metropolitan areas closer to them (i.e., New York City) while also rising home prices throughout most Northern Maryland due predominantly (but not exclusively) to Federal stimulus funding available following the Recession of 2007-2009 (). After years of being ignored by developers (), finally starting in earnest around 2014 with projects like 'Gateway East' master plan spearheaded by Mayor Roger Stone () [heavily promoted by real estate firms], various state agencies started approving zoning changes allowing greater density along I 95 corridors thus spurring even more construction throughout Eastern Shore communities bordering Montgomery County including those bordering Washington D C . While there are still several rural neighborhoods remaining scattered throughout Eastern Shore communities adjoining MontgomeryCounty - including Vice Presidential candidate RobbyMerrill’s ancestral home Wrightsville - recent trends suggest that these neighborhoods will increasingly become bedroom communities typical Of suburbs located closest To large cities
