Laurel, Maryland is a small town in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of the county and has a population of 3,000. The name Laurel comes from the Ojibwe word "ala" meaning "ford," "bridge," or "road." The first settlers in what is now Laurel were German immigrants who named their farm after their birthplace, Altenburg (now Baden-Württemberg). The area that would become Laurel was first settled by English colonists in 1624. In 1729, John Carroll purchased land in what is now Laurel from the Lord Baltimore for £10 per acre. By 1800, there were 9 families living in Laurel and it had a total population of 100. By 1812, there were 13 families living in Laurel and it had a total population of 150. In 1814, General James Kapp made his entry into southeastern Maryland as commander of Union forces during the War of 1812. He named this section of Maryland's Eastern Shore 'Laurel' after his headquarters at Fort McHenry near modern Baltimore. During the war years many soldiers died due to disease brought over by the fighting abroad and many local residents gave blood to help ease the burden on military personnel back home. At Kapp's request all men aged 25 or younger must swear an oath promising not to join any other sect upon reaching 26 years old - an act which helped solidify laissez faire economics among early settlers in this region

Laurel, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,541 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Arlington metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Laurel were the Potomac Indians who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals near present day Takoma Park. They also built wigwams on some nearby hills. A man by the name of John Smith settled in 1795 on land that now includes most of east central Prince George's County. He founded a small log cabin called " Smith's Fort" after himself and his family. In 1812, he married Pocahontas Mott and together they had six children: John (1797-1864), James (1801-1892), Mary (1804-1886), Sarah Jane (1807-1768), Thomas Jefferson Mott Sr.(May 16th 1809 - October 3rd 1888) and Josephine Mott(October 25th 1813 – May 5th 1901). From this small start, the town of Laurel grew rapidly due to its strategic location as an agricultural center between Frederick Town to the north and Lexington to the south. Many farmers from around Frederick Town set up homes here including John Leahey, Isaac Nye and others who became known as "the fathers." The first school was organized in 1800 under teacher Alexander McNutt with instruction starting in January 2nd that year according to one source! By 1830 there were over 100 students attending school out of a total population of just 10 residents! Moses Shriver set up shop here in 1827 beginning what would be an enduring partnership with local farmer James Hines which would lead to much success for both men throughout their careers together! Hines became so successful that he decided to move his business away from Fredericktown into new brick buildings on present day West Indian Hill Road which still stand today thanks to him! With such success came increased traffic which necessitated a new road being constructed; this road is now named Shriver Boulevard after Moses’ father-in-law! In addition to these prosperous times for businesses growth there have been many political changes associated with it all! From1800 until 1860 when voting rights were given back to African Americans through passage of The Civil Rights Act Of 1957 things seemed fairly stable although some difficult times did come along like World War II when parts of Laurel were bombed – primarily during 1944–1945 when many factories close down because Allied bombers targeted them specifically!) It wasn't until more recent years when more than one person has taken office at once via election results which tend towards stability that we can begin looking back at how various aspects have changed within our community over time! This paper will not only focus on events from before 1960 but also discuss notable people who lived or worked here during those years including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Congressman Elijah Cummings etc.; allowing us an overall understanding of how history affects our everyday lives today as well!
