Hyattsville is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hyattsville-Bethesda-Annapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Hyattsville was first settled by English colonists in 1781 as part of Charles Town on the Potomac River. In 1814, it became part of Frederick County and changed its name to Hyattsville after Major General Israel Putnam Hyatt who had served in the Mexican–American War as a lieutenant colonel and then major general. In 1887, Hyattsville incorporated as a city and grew rapidly due to its location on a key rail line connecting Washington, D.C., with Baltimore and Annapolis. By 1930, it had reached its current size with 8,000 residents. The city annexed nearby Silver Spring in 1974 but has not lost its nickname of "City of Light." Thecity features an impressive mix of architecture from both colonial and modern times: Georgian Revival buildings from during the early years when many residents came from England; Greek Revival homes built for wealthy merchants during the late 19th century; Victorian mansions erected by industrialists like Edwin Ladd for their employees; Tudor style homes dating back to 1689; and Neoclassical revival residences completed in the 1920s/30s which are now popular tourist destinations known for their beautiful architecture or picturesque views. Hyattsville is located on the Potomac River and forms the eastern border of Hyattsville Park. It is bordered by Bowie to the east, Olney to the south-southwest, and Takoma Park to the west. The first people in what is now Hyattsville were Native Americans who lived near present-day Bowie and Takoma Park. The area was first settled by European colonists in 1764 when John Smith discovered land on which he built a tavern and a small farmstead called Westmoreland House. In 1824, General James Kaehler established a military post named Fort Frederick within present-day Hyattsville Park. This fort served as an outpost for military operations against Native Americans until it was abandoned in 1828. The town of Hyattsville was established as a separate village on November 3, 1859 by order of Governor Prentiss Hagerty following surveys conducted by local surveyor Gilbert Ladd. On July 1, 1861, it became part of Prince George's County when it was created from portions of Carroll County. The first buildings in town were erected around this time: a schoolhouse and Methodist church were built between 1860 and 1862; an armory was constructed between 1865 and 1867; a court house replaced the armory in 1870; and two stores (the Charles Auld Store and Jonsen & Sons store) opened their doors in 1871. In 1886, Hyattsville annexed portions of Bowie Township west of Eisenhower Boulevard to form its own municipality known as Bowie Township Annexation No. 2 Incorporated October 16th 1886 with approximately 10 residents including David Fenton as Mayor/First Citizen/Segrave Street Collector./Hyattstown Cemetery Warden./Hyattstown Banker./Lloyd Trust Co.-Trustee.) In 1893–1894 black citizens residing within Bowman Township voted to become “Jasper Hill” through special elections held on November 4th 1893 pursuant to article V §2(a) (1) (A) Of The Constitution Of Maryland et al.. Jasper Hill had been designated adjacent territory outside Baltimore City limits that black citizens desired access to due largely to concerns about white violence against African Americans living withinBaltimoreCity Limits

It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Eastern Shore (WBAES) metropolitan area. Hyattsville was founded in 1837 by Captain James Waddell and his family as "Waldorftown", after their home on Waldorf Avenue in Baltimore. In 1881, Hyattsville became part of Frederick County when it was formed from parts of PrinceGeorge's and Carroll Counties. The first post office in Hyattsville opened in 1836 and remained open until 1861. The first settler to live in what is now Hyattsville was Major John Pemberton who came with his family from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1835. He built a log cabin on the present site of the post office around 1840–1845 which served as the nucleus for what would become known as "Pemberton Heights". In 1881, Hyattsville became part of Frederick County when it was created from parts of PrinceGeorge's and Carroll Counties. At that time the county had a population of just over 12,000 people and covered an area that stretched from CatonsVILLE to Bowie Township to White Marsh Township to Harford Township to Towson Township - making it one of the largest counties in Maryland at that time. In 1924 Hyattsville joined forces with neighboring Potomac Townships to form the new PotomacTownship Municipality which lasted until 1971 when it merged into Frederick County as well. In 2007 Hyattsville again joining forces with neighboring PotomacTownships to form the newHyattsvillesTownship Municipality which lasts until today!
