Hyattsville is a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,045 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The Hyattsville-Lansing line forms the border of the town with Lansing, Michigan. The first settler in what is now Hyattsville was Ebenezer Hyatt who arrived on horseback in 1799. He named his property "Hyattstown". In 1826, John Sargent built the first house in what is now Hyattsville and named it after his father-in-law, General Washington Sargent. George Washington's original home still stands and tours are available to view it from time to time. In 1871, Abraham Lincoln visited Hyattsville while he was campaigning for President of the United States and called it "the most beautiful little village I have ever seen." Emmalyn Randolph Churchill also visited Hyattsville during this time and she wrote about her experience: "I am glad I did not stay long; there would have been more than enough jollity here without any need for my presence." In 1905, Alice Paul founded women's rights groups in nearby Lansing and traveled to visit members of Congress at their office in Washington D.C., where she met then–Senator Robert Mudd (D-Calif.), who became her lifelong friend. She suggested that they form a group together to fight for women's rights across America and they did so under the name National Woman's Party ( NOW). A plaque marking Alice Paul Boulevard outside her old farmhouse still stands today commemorating her role as one of America's earliest feminists. In 1942, when World War II began – following which many small towns experienced rapid growth – Hyattsville emerged as one of its biggest wartime contributors with businesses such as grocery stores, automotive parts distributorships, munitions plants and other war industries helping support the war effort both locally and nationally through patriotic displays such as creating Victory Gardens or producing kitschy Victory Greeters for soldiers' families back home. Afterward things slowed down somewhat but never really stopped until 2009 when new development started up near State Road 417 which has raised concerns about how much traffic will be diverted away from downtown due to planned expansions by Google/ Motorola Mobility Incorporated into adjacent land usage including an even larger parking garage next door on Haggerty Avenue that will create enormous shadows over all but a very few homes within walking distance of that street; essentially changing everything about this once vibrant community center - taking away almost all its character (and some semblance thereof) because adjoining properties have been bought up by high profile developers? What used to be an Arts District has become essentially a tech corridor - something we've all grown used to but can no longer ignore or change?

Hyattsville is a small community located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hyattsville first appeared on government maps in 1785 as "Hattonsville," after Captain John Hancock and his party who had explored the area while on their way to Yorktown during the American Revolution. In 1802, it was moved from its original location to what is now its current site. The town's name may be derived from General James Hyatt's headquarters in nearby Fredericktown (now Frederick), which he built in 1793 as part of his campaign against British forces occupying America during the French and Indian War. General Hyatt also purchased land here for his new home at Mount Vernon later that year. In 1834, Hyattsville became a stop on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's mainline between Baltimore and Wheeling, West Virginia; this line later became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system. The railroad destroyed much of downtown Hyattsville during construction of its mainline through Montgomery County in 1927-1928; but some remnants remain today including one of the town's two churches (the first being Our Lady of Perpetual Help Episcopal Church) and its only convenience store/cafeteria (Alcoholics Anonymous). The post office opened at 6th & Market Streets in 1886; it closed 1975. In 1916, Robert Jahn founded Bob Jones University here in honor of his father - Bob Jones Sr., an early 20th century Baptist preacher who had served as pastor at various churches throughout North Carolina and Alabama before moving to Montgomery to become president of Morehouse College there in 1903. After serving as college president until 1928 when he retired due to ill health, Robert Jahn donated most or all of Morehouse's remaining assets - including land near HyattsVILLE - to build what would become Bob Jones University.

Hyattsville was renamed for General John Hyatt in 1802, and it became the capital of the United States in 1785. In 1886, Hyattsville was merged with nearby Washington Heights to form the city of Hyattsville. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century, thanks to its location on two important railroad lines and its importance as a commercial center. In 1932, Hyattsville was destroyed by a fire that swept through the city; however, it returned to full strength within a few years and has since undergone several expansions.
