In 1897, General Electric Lighting Company moved their headquarters from Cleveland Heights to Fredericktown when they acquired land adjacent to present dayHyattsville for $3 million dollars which formed what would become known as " GE Town." Thisgrowth ledtothe naming of Hyattsville after General Electric founder Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922). One common saying about Hyattstown is that it has been where all the action is taking place withinPrince Georges County - both before and sinceAlexander Graham Bell lived there! Hyattsville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 27,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hyattsville was founded in 1788 by James Smith and others as two small villages called "Newburgh" and "Haltom". The name Hyattsville derives from an early settler’s observation that “the hills near Haltom are very high and well wooded, while those near Newburgh are low and barren; so that the name must be derived from this circumstance only” (Fowler). In 1801, John Waddell established what would become Hyattsville as a village on land donated by his brother-in-law Samuel Gregg. Waddell named it for General Lafayette because of its location on the French River between Georgetown and Alexandria. In 1825, Hyattsville became one of four towns in Prince George's County when it was created from parts of Georgetown and Annapolis counties. In 1839, Hyattsville became home to America's first cotton ginnery when Elijah Goren built the first such facility in America west of the Appalachian Mountains. Since then, Hyattsville has been known for its agricultural production with products including apples, potatoes, onions, celery and other vegetables as well as cereals like wheat and barley
Hyattsville, Maryland was founded in 1795 by General James Hyatt and his family. The town was named for the Hays River which ran through it. The first post office in the town was established in 1800. In 1814, a military post was built here to support the War of 1812. The town grew rapidly after this and by 1830, it had a population of over 1,000 people. It declined during the 1850s due toacist immigration policies but resumed growth in the 1860s thanks to new industrialization and railroad development. In 1867, Hyattsville became an incorporated city and experienced rapid growth as a center for trade and industry. By 1920, it had reached its peak with a population of over 30,000 people. However, during World War II Hyattsville became one of the most heavily bombed areas in America because of its proximity to Nazi Germany. In recent years, Hyattsville has seen significant revitalization thanks to its location within walking distance of many major cultural attractions such as U Street SE & NE (including Nationals Park), Georgetown University Law School (JFK Campus), Bethesda Naval Air Station (nearby) and Rock Creek Park.
