The Hyattsville Arsenal was located in what is now Hyattsville, Maryland. It operated from 1785 until 1814. The arsenal manufactured artillery, small arms and ammunition, and ships. The arsenal was also the home of the United States Military Academy from 1795-1802. In 1814, the US Army moved its armaments to Fort McHenry in Baltimore for protection against British forces. In 1815, the Arsenal became a military depot and storage facility for supplies used by both the army and navy. It closed in 1830. Despite its closure, the Arsenal has left a lasting legacy on Hyattsville residents who have enjoyed using it as a park or openair recreational area since it reopened in 2006 as part of Parkland Place development project near Johns Hopkins University.

According to The Daily Review newspaper article on December 8th, 1954: "The olden days when people could get along so well with each other that they built stone walls all around their homes made up a very happy time hereabouts." Today there are many businesses in town such as banks, restaurants, churches and even an ice cream parlor! Hyattsville is a census-designated place in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Hyattsville was founded in 1881 as a small frontier town on the southern edge of Fredericktown Township and named for General David Dixon Hyatt, who had served in the Union army during the American Civil War and later became an insurance executive with interests in real estate and railroad development. In 1911, Dixon's grandson Ayer Ives Hyatt organized what would become known as The Jewish National Fund which bought land in central Hyattsville for its planned community which would include a synagogue, schools, businesses, and other services to support Jewish residents of Northern Virginia. The first steps towards building what would eventually become Hyattsville were made possible by money donated by philanthropist Isaac Silverman (1841-1927). Silverman had purchased 1 million acres (500 km2) of land along Potomac River south of Washington D.C., near Bethesda and Annapolis Junction, from noted agriculturalist Samuel Colt (1777-1865). By 1927, Silverman's gift had totaled $175 million ($ when converted to local currency), making him one of America's largest private donors to charitable causes. silverman park also contains silvermans private home which still stands today
