The Coast Guard operates in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland. The Coast Guard was founded on December 14, 1917, when the United States Congress passed an act to create a Department of Navigation and Marine Affairs. The first organized unit of the Coast Guard was Trailer Patrol Squadron One (TPS-1) at Fort Meade, Maryland. In 1934, TPS-2 was formed at Pasadena Naval Air Station as the first cutter squadron in the Coast Guard. In 1936, TPS-3 was activated at Quonset Point Naval Station and equipped with World War II vintage Catalina flying boats. In 1957, TPS-5 was activated at Patuxent River Naval Air Station and became responsible for all river patrol operations in Maryland. On July 1, 1987, CGC "Northampton" (CG-4) arrived at Havre De Grace Naval Shipyard for conversion into a coast guard Cutter Unit (CGU). On October 3rd she departed from her homeport of Annapolis for her new assignment in Havre De Grace waters protecting coastal communities along the Eastern Shore of Maryland from threats such as piracy and drugs. She has been stationed here since then and continues to provide law enforcement support to our citizens while also providing maritime safety escort services during times of dockworker unrest or other emergencies ashore. Today there are over 350 CGUs operating in Maryland including 10 Coastal Guardsmen attached to each local police department which offers mutual assistance in case one or more officers are needed outside their jurisdiction

Havre De Grace is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from a nearby river, the Albemarle River. Havre De Grace was settled by English colonists in 1683 and became part of Prince George's County in 1795. It was incorporated as a town in 1872. In 1971 it merged with Harford County to form the new county of Prince George's.
In 1795, Havre De Grace was founded as a small trading post on the Patuxent River by French colonists. The town grew rapidly and in 1851, it became the capital of Maryland. It declined during the mid-19th century as coalmining and manufacturing took over, but has since redeveloped into a vibrant city with a rich history.
