The navy has a long and diverse history in Hagerstown, Maryland. The earliest naval activity in the town occurred when the USS Constitution was decommissioned in 1814 and used as a merchant ship. In 1861, the Confederate States of America attacked Fort Sumter, fought a siege, and captured the arsenal. The navy responded with an all-out attack on Union Harbor that led to the surrender of Confederate forces. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House after his army was surrounded by Union forces. At this point, the navy contributed significantly to United States victory by transporting supplies and reinforcements to General George Meade’s forces during their battle against Robert E. Lee’s army. Additionally, sailors played an important role in lifeboat operations during both World War II and Operation Neptune’s Spear (the invasion of Iran). Today, the navy is one of Hagerstown’s most visible organizations with its extensive presence within local government as well as its significant contributions to local economy through military service and commercial activities. It is also home to two Naval Academy Preparatory Schools-Hagerstown (NAAS) which provide cadets with opportunities for naval training before commissioning into the Navy or Marine Corps; as well as three active duty Naval Reserve Units located here including HMCS Drexel (HMDRX) which provides maritime security services off Eastern Canada; USNS Brunswick (USNBRU), which provides humanitarian assistance support through whale Watching trips; and USNS Orangeburg (USNOG), providing coastal defense services in Hampton Roads region.

In 1953, Hagerstown was merged with neighboring Cumberland into what would become Northern Montgomery County as part of an effort to increase economic opportunities for both towns. Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,572 at the 2010 census. It is located on thewestern bank of the Potomac River and is bordered to the northeast by Frederick County and to the southwest by Anne Arundel County. The town was founded in 1792 as Hagerstown Township, but became a separate municipality in 1821. It was renamed Hagerstown after General James Hagaer (1759-1822), who had been a major general during the American Revolution and then served as Commandant of Alexandria Barracks from 1795 until his death in 1822. The town was incorporated as a city on November 14, 1911. The first store in what would become Hagerstown opened its doors on July 13, 1792, when Captain John Mason purchased land east of present-day Main Street for $600. By 1800, there were ten stores and twenty-one residents living within the limits of what would later become Hagerstown Township. Tobacco farming was one of the early businesses that developed in this area; it continued to be an important aspect of local economy into the 20th century. In 1821, when Baltimore City became an independent city with its own government, General James Hagaer donated 2 miles (3 km) of land between Main and Market Streets to form what would eventually become Hagerstown proper. This donation allowed for easy access by travelers along this new commercial corridor which soon attracted businessmen and entrepreneurs from all over Baltimore City. During America's heyday as a frontier society – before railroads made travel much easier – goods carried downriver from points farther away were often sold at market prices or even cheaper because they were packed into large chests or boxes transported hundreds of miles overland across open country without protection against robbers or weather conditions that could cause spoilage or loss during long voyages。 Consequently., many farmers who did not have transportation available directly to them became involved in tobacco production; these men typically erected small stills known as "tobacco barns". Although brick buildings began being built throughout town shortly thereafter (beginning around 1830), most early structures were wood frame barns with shingle roofs supported by wooden siding placed atop hemlocks or other trees near water tables (). For many years it appears that architectsurally speaking nothing really changed about our typical Maryland farm house…it simply got larger! In 1864 an act passed by Congress authorized erection of public schools throughout America due to concerns about growing illiteracy among white adults northward migrating from British Columbia/Canada . After much fundraising effort led by Mayor John Smeaton (1836-1910) education funds finally arrived in December 1865 following three years of construction with typical Masons working shoulder to shoulder side-by-side with blacksmiths (!), carpenters (& sawyers!), masons (& builders!), &c.) under one roof! At long last we had decent public education for our citizens! Today’s students may be surprised how similar some features & methods used back then are still employed today including using precast iron “picket fences” around school campuses while young children walk inside! Additionally “homespun” textbooks such as Physiology & Pathology: A Textbook Of Elementary Science And Medicine For Young People were also created utilizing local materials such as cotton twine threading together pages making up texts etc.. In addition library books such as Webster’s Cyclopaedia Of American Biography (/volume 4/ page 611), Universal Almanac (/volume 1/ page 706), complete volumes 2 thru 5 inclusive / volume 6 complete are now freely available online at no cost courtesy of The Library Services Agency
