The name of the town is derived from "green" (humble) and belt (road), as it is located on a major beltway connecting Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. The area now comprising Greenbelt was first settled by Europeans in the early 17th century as part of what is now Prince George's County. In 1792, General James Clinton established a small post here for British troops stationed in nearby Fredericktown during the American Revolutionary War. By 1800, much of present-day Greenbelt had been developed as a rural community with stores and homes clustered along two main streets called Mount Vernon Road and Essex Avenue. During the 20th century, Greenbelt grew rapidly due to its location between Washington D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia on Interstate 95; its close proximity to these major cities; and its growing trade ties with these municipalities. The construction of I-95 created new opportunities for businesses in Greenbelt while also creating challenges such as increased traffic congestion which has led to some reductions in property values over time. Greenbelt is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to Hyattsville and Takoma Park. Greenbelt was founded in 1887 by Edwin Ladd as a streetcar suburb on the corner of Hampden Road and Springdale Avenue. The first Greenbelt store opened in 1888 and was operated by Fosdick Brothers, who also ran a grocery store on Springdale Avenue. A few years later, another store opened on the same site (now part of Johns Hopkins University). In 1912, an electric tramline called the "Garden Route" arrived in Greenbelt and served the town until it was replaced by buses in 1949. In 1951, when Prince George's County were merged into Baltimore County, Greenbelt became one of four towns within that county (the others being Towson,[2] Belvidere[3], and Lakewood).[4] On July 1st, 1996 – just two days after Baltimore City Council passed an Asian American referendum authorizing implementation of affirmative action programs – Greenbelt voted to become one of three cities withinBaltimore City which would be subject to those programs; all other cities had already implemented such policies.[5] At its peak during that year's riots known as "The Great East Baltimore Riot", over 25% of the city's residents lived in neighborhoods governed by either Baltimore City or Redevelopment Authority jurisdictions which would have been impacted by affirmative action plans if they remained unaffected by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's reforms following her vote.[6][7][8][9] As part of a larger settlement reached with Mayor Rawlings-Blake over control of one half of downtown Baltimore ceded to her pursuant to requirements contained in article III–III(b)of the Maryland Constitution,[10] citizenship status for many inner city residents reverted back to their prior African American majority levels without adjustment once Open Housing Ordinance regulations were put into place affecting non-residents who resided within certain boundaries defined under Article II—IV thereof;[11][12][13][/13][/14][/15][/16][/17][/18]. As detailed hereinunder: Greenbelt has experienced various waves since its incorporation into residential areas outside what are now its suburban streetscapes - most notably during World War II when it housed workers employed at nearby Point Carbon Gas production plant east side Md.; then again from 1950s thru 1970s when much manufacturing activity shifted out westward near Interstate 95 & I-95 junction; thereafter until present day as result housing development radial outward from Beltway corridor including new suburbs created around light industrial & service sectors located along I-270 Corridor
