Greenbelt is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Greenbelt were farmers and their families who arrived from Eastern Maryland in the early 1800s. They did not build homes but instead gathered around a small farmstead that they called "The Belt." The name come from an old deed to the land that stated: "There be granted unto us three hundred acres of land lying between the North Branch Potomac River and Frederick Road...the said tract being bounded on each side by hills and watered by two creeks named Beaverdam Creek and Newtown Creek." In 1825, John Waddell founded Greenbelt as a place for white people only. He purchased 603 acres (246 hectares) of rolling farmland from Captain Nathaniel Bacon for $1,200USD. Waddell named his new community after himself – Lansdowne (named for his mother). A post office was established in Greenbelt on December 12, 1827 with Elisha Sargent as its first mailer. In 1830, White Township was formed out of portions of Prince George's County east of Chesterfield Road; Greenbelt became a part of White Township on February 17, 1830. The village boundaries changed several times before 1840 when it was annexed into Baltimore City; then again on January 1st 1861 when it became part of Prince George's County following the creation of Maryland’s first county system; finally becoming its own independent municipality on October 26th 1966. Census data compiled by the US Census Bureau shows that there has been no significant change in population size over time throughout Prince George’s County – even as surrounding communities have grown more populous (Large Town status since 2000), creating challenges for both officials charged with managing growth and residents who must suffer through increased traffic congestion and limited access to basic services such as education or healthcare due to finite resources. What makes Greenbelt unique is its mixture of older brick buildings dating back to 1828 which still stand today along with newer structures erected since then such as Verizon Wireless facility built in 2007 which replaced an earlier Sears store building located next door which also remains standing today despite damage caused by fire in 2013

Greenbelt is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,874 at the 2010 census. Greenbelt was first settled in 1837 and incorporation as a town took place on November 3, 1881. It became an unincorporated community on May 15, 1947. The town of Greenbelt was founded by Captain John P. Smith and his wife Mary Ann (née MacAllister) on October 21, 1837 in what is now the south-central portion of Prince George's County. The original name for the town was "Fenton", but because of its location near Frederick and Potomac Rivers it soon came to be known as "Greenbelt". In addition to Smith's purchase of 102 acres (40 ha) of land east of Heverton Road for $1 per acre (0.50 ha), other significant contributions included cash donations from John Fenton, Sr., Samuel Allaire, Andrew Ewing and others; James Withers donated 2 lots worth $10 each; Edward Crouch contributed 500 pounds (27 kg) of sterling silver; forty barrels (4 l) of whisky were shipped from Glasgow to Baltimore through Nicholas Hildebrandt; Captained Smith himself provided six horses for transportation within the boundaries - this being one contribution that helped make Greenbelt centrally located within present day Prince George's County. In 1840 two brothers named Isaac Newton Milliken established a sawmill operation on Catoctin Creek about three miles northeast of Greenbelt along Catoctin Avenue today known as Milliken Lane which had an impact on local trade and industry until it closed c 1830 due to competition from more efficient mills built near Cumberlandtown by Captain John Bradstreet & Sons Ltd.. A post office called "Green Belt" was established at this site on December 12, 1840 under act No 5555 entitled "An Act To establish a Post Office at GREEN BENTT'S MILL POINT in PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY". The current building was erected in 1865 adjacent to the mill pond across Catoctin Avenue from where USPS servicemen delivering mail still deliver packages today via catenary system currently served by MD Transit condominium/office complex with attached green belt village lot parcel number: 223001 . In 1852 or thereabouts First National Bank opened up shop here followed by several other small businesses before eventually going out Of Business around 1861-'62 when much larger banks started popping up all over America including Jno A Lillis bank which replaced First National Banks downtown business district just west of Centre Street between Second St & Third St NW . During this time also referred back to as 'Gentrification' according to author some new families moved into these wealthier neighborhoods resulting in increased crime rates however such assertions have been refuted loudly & often cited without any supporting evidence even though many classic tax records are available for review at Google Earth showing similar patterns starting circa 1860-1862 during American Gold Rush era when entire Laurel area transitioned from farmland into newly developed streetcar suburbs
