These three ships had been converted from LPHs/landing craft carriers which were designed as surface combatants or ASW vessels but not able to operate independently due to their small size & vulnerability when Landing Craft Dock(LCL)s became available they were reassigned as Assault Ships/Escort Carrier Squadron One such that these ships became capable of operating independently once again although still listed as Landing Craft Dock(LOC). Greenbelt is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by citizens of nearby Manassas Park to provide a place for people to live near the then-new National Military Park. The first settlers were farmers and their families who built homes on hills overlooking Greenbelt Lake. By 1886, there were 400 residents in Greenbelt and it had been designated as a village by the Maryland General Assembly. In 1898, Greenbelt became an incorporated town with a government that included a mayor and six trustees. On July 1, 1907, Greenbelt became one of twenty towns within the newly created Washington–Baltimore metropolitan area when Baltimore became its capital city. In 1923, Walter Hoyle opened what would be America's first enclosed shopping mall called "National Mall". He envisioned it as an upscale shopping center that would rival New York City's Fifth Avenue. However, because of World War II shortages of land and other factors (most notably prohibition), "National Mall" never reached its full potential as an economic center for Prince George's County until the late 1970s when it began to fill up again with new development after being vacant for many years In 1993, due to concerns about asbestos exposure from old buildings in neighboring jurisdictions such as Jessup and Takoma Park - which also had large populations - Prince George's County formed the Green Belt Alliance to promote responsible development practices in communities adjacent to schools used by children with asbestos diseases or family members living with them
