In 1908 the name of the town was changed to "Westport", in honor of then Congressman James Kieft (D-Baltimore). In 1912 Westport became an incorporated municipality with a population of 11,000 people; but because it adjoined Prince George's County too closely for its own governance, it reverted to its pre-incorporation status within two years. On July 1, 1916 Greenbelt became an independent municipal government with a population of 7,500 people when it annexed neighboring Upper Marlboro Township to become one municipality again; though Westport continued to operate as an unincorporated rural village until 1967 when all municipalities were required by state law to maintain a separate police force and fire department/halloran
