After a few years of being given as presents, a smallpox vaccine was created in 1824 and given as a gift to the Coast Guardsmen for protection against this disease. In 1861, the first Matel ship was built and given as a gift to the Coast Guardsmen for their help during the American Civil War. From then on, it became more common for commanders of different service branches to give items such as rifles or pistols to coast guard personnel. The present day Coast Guard gift history can be traced back to 1974 when Captain Roy J. Griggs presented members of the Maryland State Police Unit with an old World War I patrol boat called "Seahorse." The boat had been used by the state police unit during World War I and now served as a morale booster for law enforcement officers. After many years of use, it was decided that it would be better if the boat were donated to The Maryland State Police Museum in Annapolis, Md., which is now home to one of America's most important maritime museums. Greenbelt is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 11,869 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Washington County and is bordered by Howard County to the north and east, BowieCounty to the south and west, and Montgomery County to the northwest. The name "Greenbelt" derives from forest land that had been part of Purcell's Hundred (now Prince George's) Parish since 1692. The first settler in what became Greenbelt was John Collins in 1786. In 1802, John Pugh bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land at present-day Greenbelt for $200. In 1873, president Ulysses S. Grant visited Greenbelt while on his way to visit Mount Vernon and called it "a beautiful spot". From then until its incorporation as a town in 1909, Greenbelt functioned as a small rural community with a single store and no industry or services available outside of agriculture or farming. By 1910, however, city ordinances were being passed which would gradually change the character of Greenbelt into one characterized by dense urban residential development along with shopping centers for residents within walking distance of all major highways serving Prince George's County. Today much of what made up Green Belt has become an integrated part of nearby jurisdictions such as Hyattsville and Silver Spring; however some parts have retained their original agricultural character including Checkerfield Farms which straddles 3 counties across 2 boundaries -checkerfields are large tracts of land used mainly for raising livestock but may also include several buildings devoted to commercial purposes). The concentration of high-density housing developments in recent decades has given rise to concerns over air quality produced by traffic noise emanating from these high-rise dwellings; however this has not caused any significant public outcry yet.
The Coast Guard has been providing service to the American people for over a century. The organization was founded on April 3, 1915 by President Woodrow Wilson as the United States Department of Commerce and Navigation. The Coast Guard is an all-volunteer force that patrols and defends America's coastline. In addition to its primary mission of protecting America's coast, the Coast Guard also provides other services such as Search and Rescue, maritime security, recreational fishing, weather protection, coastal guard education and training programs. In fiscal year 2016, the Coast Guard announced it would receive $8 billion in new funding which will increase its budget by 6%. This increase comes as no surprise considering the challenges facing our country today. One of the most common challenges faced by the Coast Guard is rescuing people who are lost at sea or in distress. In order to provide gift history for this organization we looked at both past gifts and presents given from individuals and organizations within its history. We found that there is a significant amount of history associated with gifts given to the Coast Guard specifically from individuals (both public and private). Gifts have ranged from small tokens like coins or buttons to large items like yachts or helicopters. To date we have found 10 different types of gift history associated with either private or public donors to the Coast Guard. It can be difficult to determine what type of gift will make an impact on someone special but through our research we were able to identify five themes which run throughout many different gifts giving histories: Service/Patriotship; Leadership/Education; Technology/Technology; Community/Society; & Event Management/Events
