Greenbelt is a census-designated place (CDP) in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Fayetteville, DC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as an agricultural settlement in 1867 on land leased from the Potomac River Company. The first school was built in 1868 and classes were held on a farmhouse until 1871 when a new school building was erected. A post office was established at Greenbelt in 1870 and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. A sawmill started operations at Greenbelt in 1889 and continued until 1902; it had been one of the earliest mills located near Greenbelt by virtue of its location on the Susquehanna River within easy access to markets throughout southern Maryland. The mill also produced flour, feed for horses, chemicals, boiler parts and bricks for various buildings such as churches and homes. In 1912, construction began on what would become known as "Heritage Row" which included two blocks of housing that remain extant to this day: Hermitage Gardens (now known as Russian Hill) and Three Gables (now known as Mount Vernon Place). The homebuilder John Wiegand developed these neighborhoods after he moved to Baltimore from his native Germany during World War I with his wife Florence Klingeau Wiegand to escape inflationary prices caused by Russia's introduction into the war with its newly acquired colonies along the eastern border of Siberia Territory under Bolshevik rule In 1916 White Sands Ammunition Factory opened nearby; it remains one of Maryland's largest employers today with over 1 million employees including 400 retail locations across 10 states . Greenbelt, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, DC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greenbelt is located on the eastern edge of Prince George's County and contains many properties that were once used for agriculture or rural housing. These include: Great Mills Township (now Mill Creek Township), Drumheller Road and its intersection with Rte 207 just east of Interstate 495 and Great Mills Lodgepole Road outside Great Mills Park; West Branch Run Village near Bowie; and Cross Keys Farm outside Catonsville. The townsite was first settled in 1792 by John Browning, an entrepreneur who purchased 640 acres from the Potomac River Indians for $15 per acre. Browning named his new settlement Greenbelt because it would be "a belt of green land around where we should build our houses." He hoped that this would create a sense of community identity among his fellow settlers and encourage them to work together towards common goals. In 1829, Greenbelt became part of Frederick County when that county was created from parts of Montgomery and Prince George's counties. At first, Greenbelt had few roads other than a dirt track leading to farming villages situated along the Potomac River. However, over time construction began on several important roads within the town limits – including Ulysses S Grant Boulevard which serves as an artery connecting Northern Virginia with Frederick City (now Rockville) across MD State Line . Over time these Roads developed into integral elements of daily life within the town center while also providing access to surrounding farmland for agricultural production . In 1924, President Warren G Harding dedicated US 50/US 301 interchange just north-east of town to traffic flows through Greenbelt – making it one stop for travelers travelling between Washington D C and Frederick City without going through Montgomery or Prince George'S Counties
