Greenbelt is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It was founded on April 20, 1882 by John Fenton and James E. Payne as part of the townsite of Bowie. The name comes from the prevalent growth of green plants in the area due to its high potential for crop production. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,474.[1] Greenbelt was originally built on land that was donated by Edwin A. Brooke and his wife Abby (née Freeman).[2] In 1886, Greenbelt became one of two communities in Prince George's County to be incorporated as a borough; it remained an agricultural community until after World War II when industry began to take hold. The town hall is located in Greenbelt and has been used as both a municipal building and courtroom since its construction in 1903. In addition to its municipal functions, Greenbelt also provides services such as library research and advice services for residents;[3] parks;[4] a senior citizens center;[5] recreation opportunities including baseball and softball teams;[6][7][8][9][10] tennis courts,[11][12][13] golf courses,[14][15][16] and more than 100 small businesses.[17],[18],[19],[20]. On May 12th 1904, King Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered at Great Maadi Cement Plant near present-day White Flint Road and I-495 within walking distance of Greenbelt. Archaeologists were able to uncover remains dating back 3200 years which made him one of history's most famous archaeological discoveries ever made outside of Ancient Egypt. As a result of this discovery, tourism began to grow around Green Belt with people visiting Tutankhamun's tomb each year on October 26th which still happens today as "Tutankhamun day".[21],[22]; there are also events every year honoring him like Tribute Day which takes place on October 26th throughout Prince George's County while also featuring special exhibitions about his life at various museums across Maryland such as American Museum Of Natural History - Baltimore (AMNH), Washington Monument Historical Society - Smithsonian Institution (WMOHS), etc.). Many restaurants offer specials related to Tutankhamun during these events too like Karnak Cafe where they offer dishes inspired by ancient Egyptian cuisine called "Pedi" which consists mostly of falafel wraps filled with spices such as gingerbread doughnuts or pumpkin pie filling instead of regular cookies or cakes served with whipped cream or ice cream according to their recipe book that can vary quite significantly depending upon the restaurantChoice
