In 1855, Congress passed an act which provided for a national postal service through Prince George's County. On January 1st 1856, mail began being sent from Gaithersburg to Alexandria via horseback riders and wagons full of letters weighing up to 12 pounds (6 kilograms). This early mail service helped develop what would become one of America's most important cities: downtownGaithersburg became home to many businesses and made its mark as an economic powerhouse due to its proximity to several major airports as well as two large military installations: Fort Myer and Fort Belvoir. In 1907–1908 work started on building what would become known as Central Park in downtownGaithersburg which culminated with its formal dedication on July 17th 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt flanked by Mayor James Kappler and Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt
