Gaithersburg is a town located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 17,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Gaithersburg is home to Memorial Stadium and Potomac High School. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the American Civil War and died at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Custer's family moved to Gaithersburg from Indiana in 1868 and founded a grocery store on York Road known as Armstrong's Store. The store continued to be open until 1984 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1907, Judge John Augustus Keyes donated land for an agricultural school which became Memorial Agricultural College (MACC). In 1966, MACC merged with Georgetown University and became Georgetown University-McGeorge School of Public Affairs and International Studies (GEOIS). In 1976, GEOIS merged with American University in Washington D.C., becoming Georgetown University-American University College of Arts & Sciences (GUAASC). In 1998, GUAASC merged with Stroud Hall at US Military Academy—West Point to form George Washington University-Stroud Hall School of Government & International Affairs (GWUHSA). GWUHSA then became Georgetown University-Washington D.C./George Washington Univ.-Stroud Hall School of Business Administration (GWUSTBA) within GWUHSA in 2003; this merger led to the current name: George Washington Univ.-Gaithersburg Schools of Business Administration In 2007, Gaithersburg's school system underwent significant changes when it joined Prince Georges County Public Schools as part of a larger community consolidation effort in Prince Georges County called "Delaware Valley Consortium". As part of this consolidation process all local public schools were rebranded under one single name - Delaware Valley Consortium Schools A number of businesses have been built or remain active within Gaithersburg over time including Armstrong's Grocery Store which remains open today as Wellspring Foods; Maccabi USA basketball team's practice facility which has been used by many NBA teams since its construction in 1974; Bethesda Market - now known as MetroMarket - that opened in 1916 on Main Street between Constitution Avenue and Chevy Chase Drive; Heritage Elementary School which was built around 1928 on New Beginnings Way near National Airport Boulevard; Earth Science Center which opened its doors in 1978 on Park Drive northeast corner Howell Road; Druid Hill Park - also home to Maple Leaf Gardens ice hockey rink - started out as Stonebrook Cricket Club Field where baseball games were played during winter months before moving into new digs adjacent to Earth Science Center starting mid 2011 through funding from Maryland Governor Joseph Meehan

Gaithersburg is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Highlands Combined Statistical Area. The community began as a small hamlet on the west side of Gaithersburg Creek in 1824. A post office was established in 1826, and by 1830, it had grown to include what is now Gaithersburg Township and parts of Upper Loudoun County. In 1832, John Marshall Gaither became one of the first white men to settle in what is today Gaithersburg Township. The first store opened in December 1832 by James Ladd along with other pioneers including his brother Isaac Ladd and their parents David and Rachel (Ferguson) Gaither. By 1840, there were fifteen stores in the township; three of which were owned by white men and ten by black men or mulattoes. On February 14, 1861, during American Civil War hostilities between Confederate States of America (CSA) forces under General Robert Ewell and Union Army troops under General Ulysses S. Grant), Confederate artillery killed five Union soldiers nearpresent-day Silver Spring whileUnion artillery killed thirteen Confederates east of present day Gaithersburg just short of Silver Spring Road; this event became known as "The graveyard fire." In 1865 following the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in Virginia following the Peninsula Campaigns (the last significant conflict on Maryland soil before US independence), most blacks south of Frederick Douglass Boulevard (now Woodley Avenue) were removed from all public property except for military camps until Reconstruction ended two years later when African Americans lost full citizenship rights within the United States In 1898 after Waco – an act led by then Congressman Elijah Cummings – resulted in Texas annexing much northernmost Montgomery County including much than half DeKalb County lying within modern day Montgomery County including much than three quarters Edgefield Borough lies within present day Gaitherburg Borough even though no whites lived there prior to annexation; Governor William Donald Schaefer placed a moratorium on railroad construction through central Maryland pending federal approval due to concerns about development potential resulting from increased numbersOf black residents living within current boundaries Of white residents only one mile away who resided primarily on tracks running through town limits Today almost all businesses are located outside city limits making it difficult to learn more about past history
