One such donation was the $10,000 check that was given to Moira Welsh in 1923 by her husband Archibald Welsh III for the erection of a historical marker on behalf of residents of Gaithersburg who had fought in World War I. Gaithersburg is one of the most affluent towns in Maryland and has been called "The City of Oaks" because of its many large oak trees. It is also home to the University ofMaryland Gaithersburg campus and Gaithersburg Park. Gaithersburg was founded by Judge Augustus Scott Gaither on November 1, 1814 as a small farmstead named Scottsville after his father-in-law Drury Lane Scott.Scott erected a log cabin on what is now Old Court Road near today's Capital Beltway traffic interchange where he entertained visitors from across the Potomac River for days at a time during 1776 and 1777 when Prince George's County was part of Pennsylvania. In 1811, Judge Gaithersburg married Margaret Welsh who had come over with him from Ireland in 1804; they moved to this area and started farming until their first child was born in 1812. In 1861, John Ayer bought land near present day Friendship Avenue and Old Court Road for $1,000 which he donated to the town for development into an agricultural township with six voting precincts (later increased to eight). On February 9th 1863 it was announced that General Ulysses S Grant would be visiting nearby Frederick and Washington Counties during his homeward journey; accordingly the Township Committee decided to move all county offices north on Frederick Street two blocks westward along Constitution Avenue between Oak Alley and Eager Alley so that they could be available when Grant arrived in town on March 3rd. In 1916 Gouverneur Morris became Mayor following the death of James Biddle;Mayor Morris had been elected as a Republican to succeed his mentor William Preston Marshall but pulled no punches about government reform - especially when it came to taxation which saw an increase under Mayor Morris from 4% personal income tax rate in 1914 to 10%. After months of deliberation by both the Township Committee and Mayor Morris' cabinet committee ( chaired by Albert Einstein ),Gouverneur Morris presented his final plan for cityhood including annexing counties such as Garrett into our city limits – achieving this without consulting any other municipalities! This unilateral act set off a firestorm within our community that only grew more intense when Baltimore mayor Edward Mifflin took issue with Gouverneur Morris' annexation plans – ultimately leading to Mifflin being impeached less than two years later! A year later construction began on what would become Gaithersburg High School while Municipal Stadium (later renamed Colonial Athletic Fields) still stood unused outside town lines throughout much of those years – until finally opening its doors September 2nd 1926 after three years of hard work by local developers Harry Fenton & Sons & Mrs Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis! During World War II over 50 companies produced munitions here including National Technical Intelligence Service (NTIS), Walter Wriston Rubber Company Ltd., Paperhanger Machine Tool Co., Republic Steel Corporation & Bethlehem Steel Corp.; these manufacturers were located around Market Square adjacent to Municipal Stadium where workers catered directly thereto through special conveyor belts capable Of holding up To 400 linear feet/minute Of paper product ready For export! It wasn't until 1948 when Interstate 95was built concurrent with Main Street eastbound just south of Highway 301 that production stopped completely leaving behind an abandoned village surrounded by tall trees –Gaithersburg Free Library still stands today overlooking Senior Center Drive five miles west across I-95 from downtownGaitherburg!!!
