Frederick, Maryland is a town of about 22,000 people in western Montgomery County on the Potomac River. It was founded in 1814 by Colonel John Smith as a trading post and military headquarters for the surrounding area. In 1838, Frederick became an incorporated city after being accepted as a part of Washington D.C. The population of Frederick increased rapidly during World War II when the nearby naval base (now Naval Station Norfolk) opened and created new jobs for many residents. However, since the late 1990s there has been a significant decline in residents living in Frederick due to commuting costs and other factors. The community was first settled by German farmers who arrived around 1800. The town was named after King George III of England because he granted it landowner rights on the river bank adjacent to present-day Fredericktown Mall. A church was built here in 1824 and brick buildings began to be erected soon thereafter. By 1830, over 200 families lived in what is now Fredericktown while its square block had been developed into four blocks with 30 homes apiece that were used for farming, trade, manufacturing and housing (the first houses were completed between 1830-1832). In 1838, Captain Augustus Ewing established Fort Ewing at modern day Point Comfort on upper Potomac River opposite where today's downtown stands – this fort served as a trading post for local Native American tribes before becoming an all-encompassing military installation known as Fort Washingtons located adjacent to today's Navy Yard complex from 1789 until its closure in 1918 following America's victory over France at Germain’s Gap which ended French control over North America east of the Appalachians. The town quickly grew thanks to its location on both sides of the river – especiallyits strategic importance owing to its ability to supply both Washington D.C.– then called Great Britain– with foodstuffs needed for soldiers garrisoning nearby Fort Monroe or points west and also because it became one of several communities along the riverside providing access to healthy water supplies necessary for early settlements such as Alexandria (then called Fredericksburg), Georgetown (then called Annapolis), Bowie Heights (later renamed Westmoreland), Mount Vernon (later renamed Fairfax) and Frankfort which mushroomed during the period from approximately 1790 through 1800 when many colonists came looking for sites overlooking major waterways where they could farm goods produced along these waterways including those near present day Arlington National Cemetery . One such woman who had a big impact on Frederick County's development was Catherine Edmondson (1810-1876). Catherine was an Irish immigrant who arrived in America around 1825 and soon started trading with Native Americans along the Susquehanna River. She also developed strong relationships with fellow Irish immigrants who lived in Baltimore City at that time, which helped contribute to her success as a businesswoman and community leader later on in her life.
