The Air Force deployed a gift to Frederick in the form of an air force plane. The gift was made in memory of Maj. Gen. James Fenton and his wife, Mrs. Mary Fenton who died in a car accident while on vacation in Greece last year. The Fentons were visiting friends and family when they lost control of their car and crashed into a tree near the beach. Their daughter, Lt. Collette Fenton, perished in the crash as did her husband Capt. James Fenton Jr., USAF (ret). In response to the tragedy, the Air Force donated two C-130 Hercules planes to help with disaster relief efforts in Greece after Hurricane Katrina devastated that country earlier this year. In addition, a $2 million dollar donation from Boeing was given to the city of Frederick for use as its new downtown development stimulus fund which will be used for infrastructure projects such as street light upgrades and community center expansions across the city
The Air Force deployed a gift to the people of Iraq on 3/2/2011. The gift was a plane and its equipment, which had been donated by the United States Government. The plane was used for humanitarian purposes and flew to Baghdad to drop supplies to the Iraqi people. The personnel who used the plane were from different branches of the military, including air force officers and enlisted men. Some of these officers were also decorated with awards for their service in Iraq.
The Frederick, Maryland Air National Guard's 173d Airlift Wing deploys a variety of gifts to local residents during the holiday season. Some of the gifts that have been delivered include Christmas trees, cookies and cinnamon rolls, and more.
Frederick County is located in the Midwestern United States and is named for George Washington. The county was formed on November 1, 1821 from parts of Prince George's and Montgomery counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,826. Frederick County has a total area of 56 square miles (148 km2). Thecounty seat is Frederick. The county was first settled by English colonists in the late 17th century as part of what would become Maryland. In 1795, when Virginia claimed all of North America south of the Ohio River as part of its acquisitions following the American Revolution, Frederick became one of six Maryland counties to remain with Virginia. From 1821 to 1870, it played a minor role in politics until it achieved national attention due to two key incidents: The Battle at Fredericksburg and the Baltimore-Washington Campaigns. The Battle at Fredericksburg occurred on September 14, 1862 when Union General Robert Ewell led Confederate General Joseph Wheeler against Union General Ulysses S Grant and his army at Bull Run Creek Bridge over Shenandoah River near Manassas Junction After routing Grant's forces that day, Ewell moved northward into northern Virginia where he met up with Confederate General Stonewall Jackson outside Fredericksburg Jackson ordered his men not to fire upon General Grant's advancing troops which resulted in some high casualties for both sides In 1863, after Confederate forces under Jubal Early captured Petersburg from Union Lieutenant-Governor Thomas JEFFERSON made efforts to march inland towards Richmond using a river crossing known as Antietam Ridge Union Brigadier-General Winfield Scott entered Petersburg on horseback before dawn on October 13 without encountering any resistance from local residents or government officials ) Aftermath saw more than 60% civilian losses with many homes burned or destroyed as well as thousands injured including 25 officers killed and dozens wounded Baltimore/Washington campaigns were fought between 1861-1865 across 11 states – each represented by anArmy Corps Commander – each waging war against various Native American nations commanded by Major Generals John HARRISBURG (Northern), Salmon P rivers (Southern), David BROOKS (Eastern), Nathaniel PEARLSBURY (Western) & Pierre GASPARD de LA FAYETTE (Central)
The United States Air Force has a rich history of deploying gift items to other countries. From the early days of the USAF, when planes were sent as gifts to various allies, through the present day with Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Christmas Tree, the USAF has always been an active participant in international gifting initiatives. The history of air force gift giving extends back to World War I when gifts were given as part of military campaigns. In 1919, during World War I, the RAF deployed four "doodlebugs" as gifts to Great Britain's Prime Minister David Lloyd George. The RAF also donated two B-24 Liberator bombers as presents to Peru in 1944 and 1945. During World War II, air forces across the globe contributed goods and services in support of hostilities. The United States Air Force dispatched cargo planes and personnel to many destinations around the world. Included were shipments of supplies and equipment for Allied forces fighting in Europe and Asia. Additionally, members of the USAF donated food or clothing to local civilians in areas affected by war. In 1848, Frederick became the capital of Maryland. It was here that Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12,1809. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Frederick seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy. After three years of fighting, the city surrendered on April 9th 1865. The town lost much of its economic importance after the war but is still popular for its historical sites and architecture.
