Elkton has a rich history dating back to 1814 when Colonel John Smith established a small farm here. In 1881, Elmira Cotton Mill was founded here and continued to operate until 1984. Elkton is a small town in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. Elkton was first settled by the Potomac River Indians and was first known as "Wadsworth". The town was chartered on November 14, 1814 and named for General James Wilkinson of the United States Army. In 1832, the town population reached 2,500 people and it became an incorporated village on December 1, 1833. The village had a population of 3,000 people when it was destroyed by fire in 1868. The town returned to its original name in 1895 and has since grown again with a population of over 10,000 people. Elkton is located on U.S. Route 30 about 15 miles west of Washington D.C..
