The Elkton National Guard was organized on December 12, 1924 by the President of the United States. On January 3, 1928, it was redesignated as a unit of the Army Reserve. The Elkton National Guard is currently an infantry regiment that traces its lineage back to 1775 and fought in the Revolutionary War and American Civil War. Since its inception, the Elkton National Guard has played an important role in Maryland’s defense and have been called upon to help maintain order during protests, natural disasters or other events. In 1994, they were among the first units of the Army Reserve to be mobilized to support Operation Desert Storm when peacekeeping duty was assigned to them from Regular army units. Today, the Elkton National Guard enjoys a wide reputation for professionalism and serviceability within our state’s military community. They are often called upon to provide security at local events or serve as part of statewide missions such as Hurricane Floyd response or helping with searches for missing children.
