Elkton, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County and the largest community in that county by area. Elkton is located on State Route 136 about 12 miles (19 km) south of Washington, D.C., and 5 miles (8 km) east of Fredericktown. The first settler in what would become Elkton was James Hartsfield who built a cabin on land he claimed in 1784. Hartsfield was one of several early farmers who settled this part of Prince George's County after the Revolutionary War. In 1825, John Waddell arrived at what would become Elkton and started to farm there. By 1830, Waddell had erected a log courthouse and jail which remain standing today as part of the Cultural District Historic Site near downtown Elkton. In 1837, Elijah White purchased land adjacent to Waddell's farm from him for $5 per acre ($160 per kilometer). White developed this land into an agricultural center which soon became known as "the white settlement." White also built a sawmill and gristmill on his property which still stands today; these mills were among the earliest commercial enterprises in Elkton. In 1861, when Montgomery & Fredericksburg Railway Company laid track through central Prince George's County, it passed through Elmhurst Township including Elkhontown Village on its way to Fredericktown Station; this village was later renamed "Elkton" after its founder and first mayor, Elijah Brounker Sr.). When the railroad crossed over State Route 136 just east of downtown Elkton, it created an immediate demand for housing in what would become Elmhurst Township; during that time period there were no other settlements within 1 mile (1 km) of where traffic stopped on State Route 136 northbound between Washington Boulevard/State Highway 95 west of downtown Fredericktown and US 301 east-west near present day Elkton exit 153A off I-95W before Interstate 5 finally came along 25 years later Elkton experienced rapid growth during World War II with many new homes being constructed near town square due to wartime shortages of building materials such as lumber and plastic sheetmetal caused by production quotas set by the United States Government

Elkton is a town in Carroll County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Elkton is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Washington D.C., on the eastern edge of Prince George's County. The first settler in what is now Elkton was Nicholas Wright who arrived in 1774 from Virginia. He named his land "Wrightstown". The first store in what is now Elkton opened in 1829 and was run by John Epps and his family until 1861 when it became known as the Epps Store & Saloon. In 1876, Hosea Peake purchased land adjacent to the present day town square from Nicholas Wright for $700 with the intent of developing it into a village center but he never did so and instead built a house on what is now Main Street which remains standing today as Elm Court House. In 1892, Atherton Waddell donated land to be used for high school purposes and also began construction on what would become Elmhurst High School which opened its doors September 3rd, 1893. The original building still stands today across from Interstate 95 just south of mile marker 176-176A off exit 287A near Hyattsville Road/Parkway Service Rd./Upper Arlington Rd./Dalston Valley Rd./Lenoir Road/Shady Grove Dr./Willowbrook Drive outside of Bethesda MD Sharpsburg VA In 1905, one hundred acres (40 hectares) of land west of where Main Street currently meets I-95 were donated by Mrs Belle Boyd to be used for future high school purposes but again no action ever took place and that property reverted back to Ms Belle Boyd in 1992 after she died without any children being born to take up her offer It should be noted that while there have been various businesses operating within this community since its establishment such as stores, restaurants etc., none have lasted more than 10 years or more than 2 decades before eventually moving out or closing their doors having not generated enough traffic or success over time
