Elkton, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the Potomac River and is bordered by Forest Park to the south and east, White Marsh to the north and west, Aspen Hill to the northwest, Pikesville to the northeast and Rockville Centre to the southeast. The first European settlers in what is now Elkton were French traders who arrived in 1672. They named their settlement after an elk that they saw near their trading post on Hagerstown Road. The first settler in present-day Elkton was John Armstrong who arrived in 1792. He patented three tracts of land which he divided into 24 lots. In 1827, Colonel George Washington Baird purchased from Armstrong two tracts of land which he divided into 36 lots for housing potential soldiers during World War II. The town of Elkton was platted on November 10th, 1827 by will of John Ladd (inventor of Bakelite). Elkton, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. Elkton was founded in 1755 by the merger of two smaller villages. The population was 3,848 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Elkton was John Nicholson who arrived in 1765 and named his new community after his friend and patron General Edward Braddock. Nicholson had been with the British army during their attempt to capture Quebec City and was familiar with the land around Elkton. He also persuaded some of his fellow settlers to move there from nearby Bowie because he thought it would be easier for them to get crops and goods to market than doing so from farther away. In 1857, when Maryland became a state, Elkton voted to become its capital. In that year, Colonel George Washington Ramsey bought 8 acres (3 ha) of land west of town on which he built a house and put up a sign reading "Elkton Government House." The building served as the county seat until 1871 when it moved to Rockville due to growing population density within Prince George's County. In 1916, Jerome Hinton developed an artificial lake on property east of town which he used for fishing, Huntingdon College being located on one side and local agricultural production taking place on the other side; this made Elkton one of the most important towns along Huntingdon River corridor as well as regionally significant center for steel manufacturing during World War II years owing largely to its location near key plants such as U-Ship Shipbuilding and Bethlehem Steel Corporation sites just south of Interstate 95 between access points I-495/I-95W & US 301/US Capitol Beltway).
Elkton was founded in 1821 by John Elkton and his wife, Ann. The town was named for the large elk that had been hunted in the area before its founding. The first settler in Elkton was George Washington, who built a log cabin here in 1824. In 1830, Elkton became part of Cumberland County. In 1838, the county seat was moved from Cumberland to Elkton because of the increased population and lack of space on the original site. The first school in Elkton was built in 1841. In 1865, a post office was established here and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first railroad arrived at Elkton on December 12, 1870, when a connection was made between Cumberland Valley Railroad and Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. In 1903, the town adopted a charter providing for annexation by Montgomery County. This annexation occurred because of Elkin's growth as an agricultural center during this time period.
