Elkton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,463 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the western bank of the Potomac River, about north of Washington D.C. and east of Baltimore. The first settler in Elkton was Alexander Spalding, who arrived in 1792 and built a log cabin near what is now Elmendorf Road. He was followed by his son John and grandson Jameson Spalding in 1824 and 1825 respectively. By 1830, there were 10 families living in Elkton Township; by 1840 there were 25 families living there. In 1847, one sawmill opened up at Elkton Rapids; it continued to operate until 1865 when it closed down due to competition from better-maintained mills elsewhere on the river. In 1853, Elijah Broun bought land along the Potomac River for $10 per acre from Joshua Fryer; he organized what became known as "the Pioneer Party" which founded Elkmontown (later renamed Elkton) on November 6 that year. A millrace was cut through bedrock nearby and water conveyed by pipeline to power the new mill which began operations December 1st with 7 hands working force; this mill continued operation until 1924 when it burned down due to an out-of-control fire! The current mill building date back to 1889 when a three story frame structure replaced an earlier two story wood frame structure.. A post office called Elkton was established in 1854; it remained open until 1959 when it merged into Washington Post Office #1 in Laurel Hill near present day Federal Hill.. In 1861, Samuel Morse donated land at Elkmont for a school system to be built thereon (later named after him), but no physical school ever came into being however students did attend local public schools until 1916 when they moved into their own building on today's Morrison Street.. The first church here dates back to 1796 with Bethel Presbyterian Church being erected first on lands donated by Captain John Smith Sr.; this church later became Mount Zion Baptist Church which burned down in 1898 but was rebuilt and still uses that name today.. ElkTON State Fair started as an agricultural fair held annually during summertime hereabouts from 1903-1905 & 1907- 1909 & 1911- 1913 before moving permanently downtown Augsburg Park where permanent buildings were erected including: pavilion(s), midway(s), elephant house(s), tent city(*). Today’s state fairgrounds host numerous events throughout the year including: concerts/vendors/festivals/street Fair etc... In early 2006 some infrastructure improvements had been made such as roofs over upper level entryways leading inside& exits so more people could enter without having theretofore entered through windows overlooking Interstate 95 or other highways adjacent thereto making transportation significantly easier & more affordable....... total attendance last year topped 1000000* ElkTON has always been home to many different types of businesses including: retail shops independent small businesses manufacturing various items agriculture processing food services healthcare professional services government contracting insurance companies real estate development

Elkton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,851 at the 2000 census. Elkton is one of the oldest communities in Prince George's County and has been around since 1785. In 1785, Nicholas Ellicott founded the town of Elkton on land that he had purchased from the Potomac River. The first settler in what would become Elkton was John Denny in 1788. In 1821, John Hargrave established a sawmill near present-day Elkton and began to trade with Indians for goods such as skins and lumber. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1829 but it reopened two years later under new ownership. The town of Elkton grew rapidly due to its location downstream from Fredericktown on the Potomac River and its access to water resources. In 1853, Colonel Samuel Armstrong erected a toll bridge over the river which served as the main artery into and out of the community until it was replaced by an electric road system in 1901. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in what would become known as "The Elmtown". During World War II, much of downtown Elkhartt became AAF Base #1 (later known as Fort Meade), serving as headquarters for American air forces during World War II and Operation Overlord (the invasion of Normandy). In 1969, whenPrince George's County formed within Maryland following independence from Virginia, part of its purpose was to provide more representation for people who lived within its borders including those residing in towns such as Elkton which did not fall under county jurisdiction or government services like education or law enforcement. As such, many residents voted to secede from Prince George's County effective July 1st that year while others chose not to leave due to fears about their future within Maryland should they do so without approval from county officials. On August 14th 1970 ELKTON TOWN COUNCIL PASSED A RESOLUTION SAYING THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE PART OF MARYLAND ANYMORE AND REFUSED TO PAY TAXES TO THE COUNTY COUNCIL AS A FORM OF SEPARATION FROM COUNTY GOVERNMENT
