Easton, a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, was founded in 1792 by Revolutionary War veteran Colonel John Easton. It became the county seat of Montgomery County in 1836 and remained so until 1967. The population of Easton peaked at 22,500 in 1950 and has since declined slightly to 20,898 residents as of 2010. The town is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and straddles the border between the towns of Salisbury and Cumberland. It is bordered by: Bowie Township to the north; Harford Borough to the east; Middletown to the south; and Walden Township to the west. The first settlers arrived hereabouts in 1792 during what is now known as America's First Revolution. Colonel John Easton served as a captain with General George Washington's army during that conflict and may have been one of its most important commanders. Upon his return home from war he began construction on a tavern called The Post at which he occupied himself day and night for many years before it was destroyed by fire in 1809. At some point after this initial attempt at starting a community there must have been others conducted within or adjacent thereto for because when Alfred Hitchcock directed his movie "Moby Dick" within walking distance of Salisbury Landing (the scene where Starbuck rescues him) Easton voted not to allow filming without prior permission from local officials- an act that would later be parodied many times throughout Hitchock's career! In 1814 Captain John DeWolf led an expedition against Indian tribes along present day Route 66 just east of town when he discovered oil reserves thought to be unrivaled at that time! This event helped spur development around town as early prospectors set up shop hereabouts looking for new opportunities! In 1821 Drury erected a sawmill onpresentday Main Street making Easton one of Northern Virginia's earliest industrial centers! By 1830 more than 60 homes had been built hereabouts with several stores soon afterwards opening including The Bank which still operates today! By 1840 over 150 people lived hereabouts with several churches, mills, shops & residences established apiece! At this time nearly three-quarters of all coal mined regionally came from nearby Harford County!" In addition to its role as county seat, Easton also gained notoriety for hosting presidential inaugurations (Ulysses S Grant being inauguration president) both Ulysses S Woodrow Wilson (1897-1901) & Franklin D Roosevelt (1933-1945). Additionally two major military engagements fought nearby were fought herein such as Battle Of Gettysburg (1862), Battle Of Yorktown Heights (1781),& Battle Of Saratoga (1777)! Furthermore West Point Academy operated outfitting services Hereabouts right up until its closure circa 1940s!! Finally during World War II significant amounts munitions were produced hereabouts including strategic airfields like Nichols Field(later RAF Lakenheath) !! Today much infrastructure still remains such as primary schools/elementary schools(Easton Area School District), post office(opened 1860), police station(opened 1955), hospital(& Clinics Hospital Inc.), Eastern Shore Ferry Company dockyard(), numerous businesses etc., but overall population has decreased significantly thruout recent decades."
