The first European settlers in what is now Easton were Dutchmen who arrived in 1638. They named their new settlement "Winchester." In 1786, the British decided to move the capital of Maryland from Cambridge to Frederick, and Winchester became the new capital. The British government moved its military headquarters from Cambridge to Frederick in 1793 afterburner raids destroyed much of Boston's downtown area and made it difficult for British troops to maneuver effectively. In 1814, President James K. Polk appointed John Easton as commissioner of Indian Affairs because Eastern Pennsylvania was being disputed by both Spain and Russia over control of Cheltenham Township on which Philadelphia had built an Arsenal during the War of 1812. On December 3rd, 1814, Easton negotiated a Treaty of Peace between America and Great Britain that ceded all land east of Pennsylvania Line (including Cheltenham Township) to Great Britain including most present-day Delaware Valley including Easton township which was then part of Cumberland County under the jurisdiction of Westmoreland County until it was transferred from Cumberland County to Montgomery County on January 1st 1850 pursuant to Act No. 22nd St’t., cosponsored by Congressman George Hargrave (D-MD). John Easton also played an important role in developing what is now Downtown Easton into one of America’s largest shopping districts during this time period with many popular merchants like Goudy & Company (now Macy’s), Jellico & Sons (later Sears), Aspinwall Brothers Antiques store and more still existing today such as PNC Bank Tower and One Freedom Plaza

Easton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Chevy Chase, MD Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Easton was John Nicholson who arrived on October 20, 1773. Nicholson's farmstead still stands and is a well-preserved example of an early frontier homestead. In 1801, three men from Delaware named Moses Fleetwood Comer and Isaac Morse established a blacksmith shop on what is now Main Street in Easton. The shop became known as the Morse forge because its founder had connections with Eli Morse Sr., one of the founders of Baltimore City. In 1827, John Ewing purchased land east of present day First Street and Court House Road in what is now downtown Easton from Nicholas Chapman for $800 per acre (approx $ ). He built his home there called "The Oaks", which remains standing to this day. On December 12th, 1830, James Fenton bought land west of current day Second Avenue and Court House Road from Ewing for $1 per acre (approx $ ). He built his home there called "Fenton's Grove". By 1840, about 60% of all farms in Prince George's County were owned by farmers living within five miles (8 km) of town center or closer than any other place in the county except for Fredericktown and Owings Mills. On February 15th 1861 during American Civil War: Confederate General Robert Ewell issued orders ordering all Union forces within four miles (6 km) of Easton to withdraw withoutardoes or be destroyed; this order was followed by an attack against Union troops located at Fort Sumter opposite downtown Easton on April 13th that resulted in more than 150 deaths including many citizens and soldiers from both sides
