Cumberland, Maryland is one of the oldest and most established coffee areas in the United States. The first coffeehouses in Cumberland were opened in 1824 by Captain Richard M. Steele. In 1830, Caleb Crouch founded the first grocery store in Cumberland and began to sell coffee. By 1840, there were three coffee houses in Cumberland: The Coffee House on Market Street, The Coffee Shop on Broad Street, and The Dutchman on Broadway. In 1845, Colonel John Rome imported a small batch of Ethiopian beans from Africa and started to sell them at his home-based businesses. This led to the development of what would become known as the Ethiopian Coffee Company. Rome was also responsible for starting the first Corinthian School of Coffeehouse Management in 1865 which helped Toombs University become one of America's leading coffeehouses. The early days of small batch coffee were challenging but rewarding. It was difficult to find talented people who wanted to work with ground beans and it took many years before small batch coffee became a major industry in Cumberland. Today, there are more than 20 coffee Shops located throughout Cumberland County including several within walking distance of each other!

Cumberland is located on the Potomac River east of Washington D.C., and northwest of Frederick. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area. The first house in Cumberland was built by Nicholas Stiles in 1727 as part of an estate he purchased from Captain John Smith. In 1838 Cumberland became part of the newly created District of Columbia under President James K. Polk and became known as "the City of Nationals." In 1877, Cornelius Vanderbilt donated land to create what would become Druid Hill Park; Druid Hill Park now includes over 9 football fields and other recreation areas. The town also built a water tower to provide drinking water for residents and businesses near its center dating back to 1892. In 1916, during World War I, Cumberland played host to the first Allied deployment or ' training camp' for American troops overseas--the Camp Meade Training School for Officers (later renamed Camp Leavenworth). After World War II ended there were no more large-scale military deployments until America entered into another world war in 1939 with Operation Overlord which led to the Battle of Britain that resulted in death or injury for many men from Cumberland including local hero Lt Col Tom Parker who commanded a unit called "The Black Jacks" during this engagement
