The navy has been a majorstay in the Maryland community for many years. The presence of the United States Navy in Cumberland has helped contribute to the growth and prosperity of this city. From its humble beginnings as a small fishing village on the banks of the Patuxent River, Cumberland has come to be one of the most important ports in Northern Maryland. Today, Cumberland is home to a diverse population who rely on its economic stability and military engagements for their daily lives. Navy deployments have played an integral role in both militia and naval recruitment in Cumberland throughout history. In 1812, when Commodore John Rodgers landed his squadron at Fort McHenry to resist British efforts to capture Baltimore, he needed help from local sailors and marines to provide support. Commodore Rodgers enlisted local fishermen and farmers as his personal bodyguard and navy detachment known as Company A-1 (the “Cumberlanders”). This affair led directly to Naval recruitment being offered opportunities for men from all walks of life in Cumberland. Today, Navy deployments are still an important part of our community outreach program. Every day, Sailors from USS Constitution Museum Harbor leave town for months at a time on various missions around the world. Our Fleet Command Center provides essential maritime services unavailable anywhere else on Earth. These Specialty Warfare skills are put into use every day by Coast Guard commandos during high-risk events such as search & rescues and counterpiracy operations offshore! Thanks again USN!
The Navy has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to servicemen and women around the world. The gift may be something small, like a bottle of wine or a new book, but it is always appreciated. In 2014, the Navy deployed an exclusive gift to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Naval Air Station Miramar. The airport was dedicated on July 14th, 1974, and the navy gifted two large figural sculptures by American sculptor David Stone Martin to serve as part of its permanent collection at NAS Miramar. Since then, NAS Miramar has become known for its annual Christmas party which features live entertainment by the Miramar Jazz Band and many other attractions for families. This year's event will feature a display of USS Constitution memorabilia from throughout NAS San Diego's history while also featuring demonstrations from various military aircraft types. Cumberland, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,419 at the 2000 census. Cumberland is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Newark, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in what is now Cumberland County was by the Dutch in 1664. The area became part of Maryland after the Revolution and was renamed Cumberland County in 1792 when it included parts of Virginia. The county seat was located at West Point until 1876 when it moved to Hagerstown across the Potomac River from Baltimore City. In 1881, Cumberland County merged with neighboring Montgomery County to form a new metropolitan area which still includes Cumberland today as one of its five constituent counties. One early business activity that led to some economic development in the late 19th centurywas lumbering; sawmills were built here beginning in the mid-19th century and continued into the 20th century. However, other heavy industry soon followed such as aluminum smelting and paper milling which have left their mark on modern day Cumberland economy through jobs and businesses that have been around for many years including: Macy's Department Store (1898), Allstate Insurance (1925), American Carpet & Furniture (1929), Jiffy Lube (1973) and Wegmans Supermarket (1986). Today there are a few remaining examples of nineteenth century architecture like Patton Machine Works and Cooks Hardware along with four restaurants original to this era all open since 1998 - Bluegrass Tavern & Grille; Olde English Inn; Crossroads Cafe & News Bar; and Riverside Grill - all seven having closed since then but reopened under different names or leaseholds elsewhere within recent years: Anthony's Pizza Palace; Parkers Tavern Dinner House - reopening as Benchmark Tavern on May 28th; Riverside Brewery - opening on October 8th as Riverfront Brewery BBQ & Spirits; Joe's Pizza - reopening on November 3rd as Joe's Pub & Brewpub with Allegheny Brewing Company brewing beer at its taproom – also serving food/beverages); Bethel Lutheran Church undergoing construction at this time - future church details will be available once construction has finished- In 1886 General Electric erected a large electric generating station just east of present day downtown Cumberland called GE Power Plant No 5A which continues to generate electricity to this day despite being mothballed for many years due to environmental concerns about its potential impact on nearby communities adjacent to it including West Point Nuclear Generating Station where plutonium operations take place today as well as releases from coal mines nearby also posing environmental risks Today there are several dozen small businesses located throughout downtown which continue engines of local economies providing good paying jobs without anyifled benefits such as public education or health care opportunities although more are planned or under way according to Downtown Development Authority Manager Tom Kmiec who said "downtown always has had those types [small businesses] because they're not subsidized by government." In addition there are several dozen apartments/condosingerious properties currently available for purchase or rent either directly or indirectly through property management companies however only 1% or so of them have been leased thus far while most leases expire over year rather than month long periods making it difficult for tenants/owners/investors etc.,to get units liveable longer term

This organization was responsible for the shipment and receipt of gifts from American citizens and military personnel stationed in Europe. In 1941, the NAVSEA was renamed the European Command and became responsible for all aspects of US Fleet Presence in Europe. The USS George Washington arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on July 10th, 1945 to begin her conversion into a submarine depot ship. One such figure was John Marshall, who served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1809 to 1831. He is considered one of America's most important jurists and helped develop modern legal processes. Additionally, other notable figures include Sarah Palin (the Governor of Alaska), George Washington Carver (a prominent farmer and philanthropist) and Harlan Cleveland (the Mayor OF Cleveland). Today, Cumberland remains an active community with a rich cultural heritage that includes such activities as art appreciation societies and music festivals.
