Cumberland, Maryland is a town located in Montgomery County, Maryland. The population was 11,826 as of the 2010 census. The name Cumberland may come from its location on the Susquehanna River and its coal mining history. The first European tosight Cumberland was by the French in 1558 during their expedition up the Susquehanna River. This began a long period of British rule over what is now Montgomery County. The community took form around 1813 when James Addison donated land for a courthouse and school district. In 1836, Cumberland became part of Baltimore City and lost its independent status. In 1907, it merged with Harford County to form one large county. In 1963, Cumberland voters passed an ordinance allowing mixed-race marriage within the town limits without prior approval from either party’s board of trustees. As a result of this ordinance, much progress has been made since then towards racial equality in Cumberland – including passage of legislation that provides affirmative action opportunities for historically marginalized groups such as African Americans and Hispanics. Today, Cumberland is home to many businesses and professionals which continue to contribute significantly to both local economy and social fabric alike; making it an important center for regional commerce and culture in all aspects of life hereabouts!

Cumberland is located on the Potomac River and is part of the Washington metropolitan area. At one time it was a major commercial center for the Eastern Shore of Maryland and also served as an agricultural center. It began to decline during the 20th century due to suburbanization and other factors. Cumberland was first settled by the Potomac River Indians in the early 17th century. The first white settlers arrived in Cumberland around 1650 and numbered only a few hundred. By 1800, Cumberland had a population of about 10,000. The town of Cumberland was chartered in 1812, and is now the largest city in Maryland. In 1814, during the American Civil War, Cumberland sided with the Confederacy and lost its city charter. However, it regained its charter in 1865 as part of Maryland's re-establishment as a slave state after being abolished by the United States government.
