The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at a crossroads connecting several important routes: The railroad made it easy for farmers to get goods to market; industry developed with mills built along both sides of the river; and residential development began with spacious brick row homes being erected around 1900. By 1930 only a small amount of commercial activity remained downtown while most residents lived outside of town. However, again growth brought new enterprises such as a health care provider in 1980s and 1990s which helped revive downtown business overall Settlement within downtown slowly resumed during the 2000s but has never regained its pre-2000 levels Downtown businesses were forced out when Montgomery College moved into their new campus across I-495 in 2006 but have since reopened . The history of Cumberland, Maryland dates back to the time when it was part of Virginia. In the 17th century, the area that is now Cumberland was home to a number of Native American tribes. One such tribe was the Lenape. The Lenape were a Delaware people who lived in and around what is now Cumberland. In 1670, English colonists arrived in what is now Cumberland and started developing the area. By 1690, some parts of present-day Cumberland had been claimed by both England and Maryland. In 1692, a group of settlers from Scotland came to what is now Cumberland and began developing their land. They called their new community "Cumberland." By 1700, however, most of what is today Cumberland had become part of Virginia. However, because Maryland belonged to England at this point in its history (it became an independent country after independence from Great Britain in 1801), some stores and other businesses continued to operate in Maryland until 1800. Even after becoming an American state, Maryland still shared many ties with Scotland through its culture and language. As a result, although much of modern-day Cumberland had been developed by Virginians before 1700, many Scots also settled there during this time period. During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), many Scottish soldiers fought on behalf of America against British forces. Some members of these troops returned home and took up land adjacent to where they currently live in northern Montgomery County as well as parts of Prince George's County (now Annapolis). This area became known as "the Scotchtowns." Most importantly though, these Scots helped turn numerical victory for America into battlefield success—the Battle at Saratoga resulted in more than two thousand casualties for Pennsylvania but only five for British forces!
