However, some of the most well-known origins for Tactical Coffee can be found at the University of Maryland in College Park. In 1984, a group of students at the university decided to start a small café known as The Grapes. The café quickly became popular among students and was soon joined by other campus organizations such as the student government and the school's Phi Delta Kappa fraternity. During its early years, The Grapes served coffee within easy walking distance of several buildings on campus. Additionally, the owners started creating customized blends of coffee that they sold directly to attendees of their cafés. In 1990, The Grapes relocated to its current location on North Charles Street in College Park. At this time, it became clear that the cafe was becoming too popular for just one small building on campus. Accordingly, The Grapes purchased two adjacent properties on North Hanover Street in College Park and began expanding its operations into what is now known as "The Annex." This expansion allowed them to serve more people from around Northern Maryland each day and made it possible for them to offer even more customized blends of coffee than before. Currently, there are six separate cafés located throughout "The Annex" - four inside which are open daily from 7am-12pm or 1pm-5pm EST (the last being closed Mondays), while two are open during selected lunch hours only (11am-1pm ET). Despite their many successes over the years - including numerous awards and nominations from various food magazines - none of which have ever been awarded officially - The Grapes have always remained an informal community institution at University of MarylandCollege Park. With that in mind, it is interesting to note that not one but both their founders were also alumni of UMCP itself: Drs Michael Lappin ('65) who served as vice president for academic affairs until his retirement in 2001; John Weintraub ('68) who currently serves as associate dean for Academic Affairs & Dean's Office; and Edwin Jaffe ('77) who has been influential in developing UMCP's Center for Collegiate Studies since its inception in 2002...Today marks another milestone for TACTICAL COFFEE when we become members OF THE AMERICAN BAR Association!
