In 1877, the University of Maryland was founded as an agricultural school by five professors from Baltimore. In 1962, it merged with Garrett School of Business to form the Johns Hopkins University System. Upper Marlboro was laid out in 1792 by Samuel Smeaton while Lower Marlboro was laid out in 1795 by John Smith. On October 15, 1875, President Ulysses S Grant issued an executive order creating what would become known as "TheUniversityof Maryland." The order stated that "the present system [of education] cannot continue indefinitely" so "a new institution must be organized for higher instruction" at this time within our Republic which was then underdeveloped economically due to lack of resources donated by our British friends who had taken control after America's independence from Great Britain. The first president (and first chancellor) appointed to this new institution was Drs James Gillett (1851-1927), Francis Biddle (1859-1941), Averell Harriman (1863-1937), James Foust (1874-1945), Crampton Mifflin Beal (1878-1948). From its inception until 1959 when it merged into Johns Hopkins University System there were nine presidents who served concurrently: Drs James Gillett (1851-1927); Francis Biddle (1859-1941); Averell Harriman (1863-1937); James Foust (1874-1945); Crampton Mifflin Beal (1878-1948). There have been seventeen current presidents since 1959 who serve until 2020 including Drs Donald Wills Hewitt(1988-) ; Ross Perot(1992-) ; Elizabeth Dole(1996-) ; Barack Obama(2008-) ; Barbara Mikulski(2010-) . These Presidents have overseen some significant changes at UM such as increasing enrollment from 10K students per year to 25K per year while maintaining excellent faculty memberships along with continuing investment in research facilities across many faculties giving us some world leading experts today! One recent example would be our groundbreaking work on regenerative medicine which is now being studied all around the world thanks largely to our innovative Ventures program!
