College Park is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. The University of Maryland lies in College Park. The first settlers in what became College Park were men from England who arrived in 1776 as refugees from the British Isles. They founded Dorchester County, which included present-day College Park and many other villages and towns. At that time, there were only a few farms around the area, and most people lived near the ocean or on smaller islands in the Chesapeake Bay. As Maryland grew more populated and developed, College Park gradually became known as one of its most important communities. The arrival of large numbers of European immigrants in the 1800s helped contribute to this change. Many new families started out living near each other but soon realized that they would need to move if they wanted to get involved in local politics or business. So they began moving away from their original homes and settling in areas such as College Park proper or those nearby suburbs like Upper Marlboro and Bowie Heights. This migration led to an increase in social diversity within College Park itself – something that still persists today! In addition, it also created opportunities for businesses to grow quickly and become well-known throughout Maryland’s larger metropolitan area.
