College Park is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 23,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Potomac River, just downstream of Washington D.C., and is bordered to the north by Montgomery County and to the east by Frederick County. The city was named for College Hill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was incorporated as a town on December 22, 1826. In 1881 it became a City of Baltimore through an act of Congress and merged with Carrollton to form what is now Baltimore County. On January 1, 1907 this county became part of Maryland again when it was split off from Baltimore County. In 1870 College Park had a population of only 6 people; however this increased rapidly due to waves of new immigrants coming into the area: Germans (37%), Irish (27%), Poles (10%), Italians (5%), Japanese Americans (2%) and African Americans (1%). By 1900 College Park had reached its peak with over 50 residents living in small homes on or near Prospect Street between Highland Avenue and South Spring Street. However during World War II College Park experienced some tragic events which changed forever its character as a community: on September 17th 1941 two bombs exploded inside the old Carnegie Library killing 15 people including Mayor Harry Sibley and six other municipal employees; one bomb also destroyed several businesses within blocks radius; additionally more than 100 students were injured in what remains one of America's deadliest terrorist attacks ever committed against civilians at that time In 1945 after Japan's surrender American troops liberated College Park from Japanese occupation; soon afterwards many businesses closed due to American economic sanctions against Japan following World War II The population peaked at around 80 residents in 1960 but gradually declined until reaching its current level today around 23,711
The University of Maryland in College Park was founded in 1867 as the Maryland Agricultural and Mechanical College. The school became a university in 1916 and moved to its present location on Carroll Avenue in 1927. In 1924, the school merged with nearby Johns Hopkins University to form what is now known as the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
