Cambridge, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cambridge is located on the eastern border of Prince George's County and borders jurisdictions including Hyattsville and Owings Mills to the north, Greenbelt to the east, White Marsh to the south, and Rockville Centre to the west. The town was founded in 1784 by John Smith as a small community on land donated by Captain Francis Nicholson. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century due to its location near several major rivers and trade routes. In 1792, Cambridge became an incorporated village after becoming one of three towns included in Frederick Douglass' new county of Prince George's. The development of railroads allowed for rapid growth in Cambridge during this time; in 1868, it had over 60 businesses and 1,000 residents. During World War II, Cambridge was home to more than 50 chemical plants used for producing munitions and other explosives; many were destroyed or converted into housing following the war. Afterward, much of the commercial activity within Cambridge shifted towards Hyattsville or Owings Mills while a few remaining businesses reopened along Route 20 (now known as Main Street) which remain active today as a shopping center with numerous restaurants and shops

The first national guard was formed in 1790 during the American Revolution. The purpose of the guard was to provide security for districts in New York City and other locations. In 1924, the National Guard seceded from the United States and became an independent country under the name of Mexico. On July 4th, 1949, America declared war on Mexico and the Mexican national guard was activated to support the American effort. The Guard has also been called into action multiple times since then including during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Operation Neptune’s Spear in Afghanistan in 2001, and Puerto Rico relief efforts after Hurricane Maria last year. Although it is not a combatant unit like regular army or marines, there is always potential for members of the National Guard to become involved with any Johns Hopkins-led healthcare research project or perform community service if they feel their country needs it most.
The National Guard was established on July 16, 1776, by the First Continental Congress. The first Guards were raised in New York and Pennsylvania. In 1814 an act was passed authorizing the organization of a national guard service in each state. On July 4, 1861, the first Regular Army Militia Regiment was organized in New York City as part of the 1st Infantry Division of the Union army. On December 8, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered all military forces in America to prepare for war with Japan. On January 6, 1942, the U.S. War Department created two new services: First Special Service Force (FSSF) and United States Coast Guard Reserve Forces (USCGRF). The FSF was activated on February 5th and comprised men from both Regular Army and National Guard units from across the country who had volunteered to serve in wartime under regulation 28 CFR Part 11 which stated that "No person shall be called into active military service for any purpose other than rendering such assistance as may be necessary for Defense." In 1945 both services were reorganized into their present form: The National Guard Bureau became The Military Department of The Department of Defense while USCGRF became The United States Coast Guard Reserve Force.
The city of Cambridge, Maryland was founded on December 12, 1751 by the merger of two small settlements, Northampton and Swenzerville. The name was chosen in honor of John Smith, the first British Governor of Maryland. In 1771, the town reached its present size with the opening of the Susquehanna Canal. By 1800, Cambridge had a population of over 10,000 people and it became an important center for education and business. The city's economy shifted towards manufacturing during World War II as wartime production increased demand for munitions in nearby Annapolis. After the war ended in 1945, Cambridge experienced growth as businesses transitioned from manufacturing to services. In recent years, however,Cambridge has been struggling with a decline in its population and economic fortunes. In 2013-14, Harvard University removed Cambridge from its list of "Harvard 25" because its enrollment had grown faster than that of any other university in Massachusetts or New York City. The first people to settle in Cambridge, Maryland were the Lenape Indian tribe. They arrived in 1675 and named their settlement Cambridge after the University of Cambridge in England. The town was initially a small village with only a few homes. However, over time, it grew into a large community with over 100 residents. The town was annexed by Baltimore in 1802 and became part of that city's municipality. In 1925, Cambridge became an independent municipality once again under the name of Cambridge-on-the-Intraoceanic Railway Company.
