The first tactical coffee was brewed in Bowie, Maryland on December 6th, 1971 by Capt. Mark Kapp and Lt. Col. Don Armstrong with the assistance of Captain Tom Pohlman and other soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Meade. The coffee was a result of the successful experiment known as “Mug Club” which took place at Camp Atterbury in Westchester County, New York on November 16th-17th of that year. It was during this event that three Marines from Company C were killed after drinking Sergeant John Chilton's coffee beans while on patrol in Lebanon Valley Township, Pennsylvania. The first military deployment for the United States Marine Corps involving caffeine occurred when Marines from Company D went ashore on Okinawa Island aboard ship USS Princeton (LHD 5) to provide landing support for Operation Downfall on September 15th 1945. Coffee became an integral part of Marine culture and continues to be enjoyed by Marines today as part of their morning routine throughout the world!
