The Army Garrison of Bowie, Md. was founded in 1778 and served as a recruiting ground for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The garrison grew over time to include a detachment of artillery and infantry units, as well as a military academy and hospital. In 1815, the Bowie garrison became one of the first posts to be manned by U.S. Marines when they were activated at Annapolis, Md. In 1865, after the Civil War ended, Bowie garrison was disbanded and its assets sold off in order to finance other military activities in Maryland until 1925. Today, theArmy Garrison of Bowie is back on duty with Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) stationed at Fort McHenry Park across from downtown Bowie!
