The history of coffee in Baltimore is vast and includes a variety of beans from all over the world. The first evidence of coffee consumption in Baltimore can be traced back to the early 1800s when Dutch traders began trading with the area. This trade led to the discovery of Java, which was then traded for goods such as coffee. By 1824, Dutch settlers had started another trade route that crossed into Maryland, bringing coffee with them. By 1830,Baltimore had become an important port due to its location on the Chesapeake Bay and its access to shipping lanes. Coffee cultivation began in earnest in this area and by 1835, about eighty-five farmers were growing coffee beans near present day Henry Street and Lombard Street. In 1846, a group of British investors purchased a majority stake in one of Baltimore's largest commercial enterprises; John Frisbie & Sons Coffee House became known as The Coffee House at Howard St., now known as Pratt Hall Museum. In 1865, Baltimore's first espresso machine was brought over from Italy and quickly became popular among locals and tourists alike. Coffee production continued until 1978 when it was replaced by microwave ovens for domestic use. However, today there are still many cafes that serve quality coffee products such as Turkish omelette or chai tea drinks throughout downtown Baltimore!
There is no doubt that coffee is one of the most popular beverage on earth. It has been enjoyed by humans for over 5000 years and continues to be enjoyed by many today. Coffee is a stimulant and its content of caffeine can help to improve alertness and focus, whereas its low acidity helps to preserve fruit flavors. The beans used in coffee are grown in many different environments around the world, meaning that each bean has unique flavor and aroma.
Baltimore's coffee history goes back to the early 1800s. Coffee was first cultivated in the area by Native Americans and early settlers. In 1825, a Dutchman named Cornelius de Valk acquired a small plantation in what is now Harbor East. He began importing coffee from Java, which he roasted himself and sold at his shop on Monument Street. The demand for quality coffee in Baltimore led to the construction of two large roastinghouses in 1829-30: John Fenton's on Lombard Street and George Jones' on Camden Yards. Coffee production peaked around 1880 due to increased trade with Europe and Asia. However, during the late 19th century, farmers began planting more almonds and other fruits instead of coffee beans, which caused a decrease in crop yields. In 1886, Baltimore became the first city in America to prohibit public drinking of coffee.* This prohibition did not last long however; by 1890 local citizens had started throwing cups of java out of windows as part of their morning ritual* By 1898, Baltimore had become one of the leading cities for caffeine consumption in America. Coffee houses such as The Owl On Elm (now known as The Local) were popular destinations for locals and visitors alike to gather around a table and enjoy some good old-fashioned Americana* *note: It should be noted that many Starbucks locations actually date back to before 1895!
