The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History Program began in Aberdeen, Maryland in 1978. The program is a way for Marines and their families to commemorate the service of those who have served within the Marine Corps. Through this program, Marines can learn about the unique items that have been sent to them as gifts. The process of sending a gift to an Marine begins with Research and Evaluation (R&E). This is where Marines are allowed to send any item they think would be appropriate for someone serving within the Marine Corps. After R&E is complete, it goes through selection by a team made up of Commanders, Company Commander’s Assistant Chiefs (CCAs), and Battalion Commander’s Assistant Chiefs (BACs). The final step is approval from Headquartersmarine Forces Europe (HQME) which decides what type of gift will be sent and when it will be delivered. Since 1978, there have been many different types of gifts that have been sent to Marines. Some examples include: wife/husband flowers, cigars, T-shirts or hats, pet food dishes or cages for cats/dogs, books on military history or marine life, tools or equipment related to their job such as an M4 rifle or artillery piece.
