Westbrook, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,694 at the 2010 census. Westbrook is part of the Portland–Augusta Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to live in what is now Westbrook were the French in 1604 and 1605. A key player in early development of the town was Amos Bedell who donated land to the town in 1820. In 1824, George Washington visited Westbrook while on his way from Portsmouth to Augusta. He stayed at the Bedells' home for two nights before continuing on his journey. In 1825, when it was discovered that there was gold hidden under snow near present-day Westbrook, many people rushed to find it and started a gold rush which led to heavy investment and three years of hard work by local farmers followed by a period of prosperity during which goods transported by canoes over water arrived daily from Bangor and Gloucester. When Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, most of what is now Penobscot County became part of Indian Territory under Ulysses S. Grant's orders following his occupation of Maine as General Winfield Scott's army moved westward across America during the Mexican–American War. The town did not become incorporated until 1862 after local men metamorphosed their efforts into an organization known as "The Westwinds" led by Hemanus Stevens (1813-1900). In 1949-1950 construction began on Interstate 95 through Penobscot County and Westbrook became one of its interchange points near milepost 207 eastbound and milepost 219 westbound - becoming one of only two towns along I-95 with both entrances lying within municipal boundaries at that time; also serving as a dropoff point for motorists coming off I-295 north between Waterville and Gorham townships; this interchange created significant economic opportunities for residents who had access to Interstate 295 south bound just minutes away from their homes As more residents moved into area surrounding I-95 they began looking for other forms of transportation so they could get around town without having to use Interstate 95 or drive all the way out there into rural areas

The town was named after George Westbrook, an early settler. In 1874, the post office was renamed Westbrook after Governor Anson B. Westbrook of Maine. The town has a rich history that goes back to its founding days. General John Stark and his family were the first settlers in what is now Penobscot County and they named their new community Westbrook because they found it on their way to explore this new land. The name stuck and today's version of the town is known for its beautiful architecture which dates back to when it was first settled. One of the most famous buildings in town is the Old Custom House which was built in 1875 by Samuel Morse Sr., one of America's pioneer telegraph operators. It is also home to the first shopping mall in New England and has been used as a school gymnasium, movie theatre, social hall and more than once as a polling place for local elections! In 1974, when Governor Anson B. Westbrook came to visit Westbrook he noticed that many people were having trouble getting access to healthcare due to distance from hospitals or lack of resources available locally. He decided that change needed to be made so he launched an initiative called "Healthy Communities For All" which aimed to provide affordable healthcare services within reach of everyone living in communities across Maine. The program has since grown into one of the largest health promotion programs ever implemented by any government entity in New England! Today Healthy Communities For All provides healthcare coverage for over 500 full-time employees who serve patients at over 100 locations statewide!
Westbrook was first settled in 1795 by a group of New Englanders. The town was named for General George Washington, who died in 1799. In 1827, the town was moved to its present location and renamed Westbrook after General John A. Westbrook, an American general during the Mexican-American War.
