The Marine Corps has been deploying gift-bearing Marines for over seventy years, through various wars and peacekeeping missions. The tradition of Marine Gift History began during World War I, when Marines distributed small boxes of supplies to troops in France as a thank you for their help. Westbrook, Maine is a small town in the eastern United States located on the Penobscot River. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. Westbrook is known for its annual Westbrook Days festival and as the home of the Westbrook Symphony Orchestra. The town was founded in 1852 by English settlers and has since been renamed after its two main founders, General George Washington Westbrook and his brother Solomon Westbrook. The town is named after General George Washington Westbrook who led an army against British forces during the American Revolution. General Washington's troops were based in what is now Westbrook and he donated land to the town for development. The name also honors Solomon Westbrook who was one of America's first governors. In 1879, Solomon Westbrook donated 5 acres of land to establish a public school in honor of his son-in-law, Judge James Gadsden Greene. Maine State Route 6 runs through parts of town making it easy to get around. Highway 169 leads eastward from town limits while highway 218 leads westward to Interstate 95 just outside of town limits. According to 2010 census data, there are no major highways that run through or pass through Morrison Township like they do in other townships in Maine. This could be because Morrison Township was created when part of Cumberland County was split off from Knox County and became its own municipality in 1908 which means that mostringe roads withintown were built during this time period rather than being developed later on According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all land.

Westbrook was first settled in 1795 by Loyalists who fled the American Revolution. The town was named for General James Westbrook, who fought with George Washington in the American Revolution. The area now known as Westbrook was first used for farming and grows corn, wheat, and potatoes. In 1822, a post office was established in Westbrook and served the community until 1914. In 1835, the town had a school and two stores. By 1860, there were six homes and seventy-six people living in Westbrook. By 1870, the population had increased to one hundred fifty-six people. One of the early businesses in Westbrook was a shoe store operated by John Parsons from 1871 to 1889. When war broke out in 1861, many residents became soldiers or pursued other military careers during the Civil War. AfterWARDS: In 1865, after Maine seceded from the United States, President Abraham Lincoln called for Federal troops to be stationed in Maine to suppress secessionist sentiment. This led to an influx of new settlers into towns such as Westbrook which were then under Federal control because they did not have statehoods yet In 1872, when president Ulysses S Grant issued Executive Order 9393 providing financial assistance to states that seceded from America due to their lack of representation in Congress regarding slavery (Oklahoma excluded), Westbrook applied for financial aid In 1875-1876 local banks failed due to low credit ratings which caused economic hardships for locals Beginning around this time period there began what is now known as "the great depression" across much of North America Residents of Westbrook voted on May 10th 1886 (two days after Election Day) whether or not they wanted incorporation into Bangor County

In 1812, the town was renamed for Maine Governor Jonathan Knowles. The area now called Westbrook was part of Acadia Parish until it became a part of Portland County in 1834.
