At that time, the business was renamed The Gunsmiths Shop and continued to be run by the Sylvesters until it closed its doors in 1996. In 1992, J.B. Hoskins’ grandson, John B. Hoskins III took over the business and has kept it running ever since as The Gunsmiths Shop Ltd./The Gunsmiths Shop at Westbrook (GSL). During John B. It is part of the Bangor-Winterport Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Westbrook were people who came overland from Massachusetts in 1604. They became known as the "Waldo People." In 1786, they founded what is now Westbrook Academy which still exists today. The town was incorporated in 1872 and had a population of 512 in 1910. It declined to 508 at the 2000 census, but recovered to 551 at the 2010 census due to migration and annexation by nearby Winterport. According to the United States Census Bureau, Westbrook has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 508 people residing in the town: 342 men and 248 women. The population density was 23 people per square mile (9/km²). There were 409 housing units at an average density of 11 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of this town was 97% white, 2% black or African American, 1% Native American, 1% Asian, 0% from other races, and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%. 2

The 19th century saw a shift towards civilian use of firearms, as military arsenals began to dwindle in size and resources. Gun buying habits changed too- mass shootings became increasingly common instead of sporadic incidents involving individual shooters. In 1886, President Grover Cleveland signed the National Firearm Act which required all Americans to have at least one working fire arm at home. This act also outlawed Shotguns, Revolvers and other simple handguns without certain safety features such as triggers that could be pulled multiple times without release mechanism (a feature later added on pistols). By 1920, assault rifles had become popular among professional gunmen across America. These rifles featured long barrels that allowed for accurate shooting from far away; they were also easier and faster to assemble than handguns. Firearms manufacturers responded by introducing new models each year until 1934 when Congress passed the National Firearms Act which limited production of any type of firearm except shotguns and rifle sights (later becoming part of handgun laws). During its time as the capital, Westbrook experienced some major growth including an increase in education and business opportunities. In 1896, they moved their government operations out of town and into what is now downtown Westbrook. The city has since undergone several rename changes including Westbrook in 1907, Westborough in 1916, and finally Westbrook again in 2018.
