Many of these men did not return home after war ended, leaving behind homes and businesses that needed to be taken care of before they could re-open again. This left a vacuum that was filled by local resident John Purdy who started work on rebuilding churches in 1919. In 1925, he purchased what is now known as Purdy's Store which became one of the town's most important business districts until it closed down in 2001 due to economic decline。 In recent years, Westbrook has seen some growth with development taking place near its center including new housing developments as well as an increase in commercial activity such as restaurants and stores within walking distance of downtown square. Despite these positive changes, however, much work still needs to be done before Westbrook can reach its full potential; for example, there are still no public transportation options available within or outside of town so visits are necessary for any meaningful exploration or research purposes
